Shall We Keep In Office a Sheriff Who Allows Gambling Dens to Run Wide Open? 1 When Detroit drove the gamblers out the latter merely stepped across the city line and re-opened in the county. At the left is an illustration showing the gambling house which Danny Sullivan ran in Grosse Pointe and at the right, the garage above which Lefty Clark operated his notorious joint in tcorse. Both places ran wide open without interference from the sheriff of Wayne County for 18 months. 1+ 1-1- Fr. 11 41 +I +I I+ I+ 1.1 Ffi 14 ii -14 Fr. 4 1+ 4 +1 44 iM +I 11 i ii Fr! +1 1.31' Fi F Fir 1 4 14- 44 Fr. Fr. 14. + 1 11 Fir 11 11 4 I- Fr. 41 1 Fr. 41 Fi F LEFTY CLARK'S OLD PLACE IN ECORSE DANNY SULLIVAN'S FORMER GAMBLING HOUSE IN GROSSE POINTE Wayne county has been a crooks' paradise, a gamblers' safety zone for two years. Detroit drove the gamblers out. They immediately located in the county. Lefty Clark's outfit ran wild in Ecorse. Danny Sullivan did the same in Grosse Pointe. Every effort made by the press to force the sheriff's office to take action against these hot spots of the underworld met with failure. Sheriff Wilson not only refused to act, but went to Florida and stayed there. Then the word went out to the crooks in Chicago, St. Louis and other cities that there was a protected zone at the very gates of Detroit. Any trained police officer could have told Detroit and Wayne county what was coming. It came. One cold-blooded killing after another. Murders on the downtown streets! Kidnapings! Blackmail! Bank robber- ies! Gang wars!' And finally, Jerry Buc!cley was murdered in the lobby of a Detroit hotel. The state, the city and the county went to war with the under- world. Every police force at the command of the people re- sponded-save the one under the command of Sheriff Wilson. That force could not respond to the emergency, because in less than two years it has completely collapsed as a law enforce. ment agency. It was necessary to petition the governor repeatedly to send state troopers in Wayne county to do the work which Sheriff Wilson's force should have done. Not even when state, city and town police forces joined to hunt for the slayers of Jerry Buckley in downriver resorts, or when they raided the gangsters' nests in Grosse Pointe and cap- tured several suspects, not to mention an arsenal of gangland guns, did the sheriff act. Up to a day two weeks before the primary election syndicate- owned slot machines were operating by the hundreds in all parts of Wayne county. They could be found in every good corner, taking their terrific toll of crooked profits. Yet when the newspapers approached Sheriff •Wilson and asked what action to take his reply was an insult to the press and the public which it represents. The attitude of arrogant defiance which has held Wayne county's gate open to the crooks of the country for almost two years has not changed. A Vote For It must be evident to the people of Wayne county, of which Detroit is a part, that the only remedy for conditions is to place in charge of the sheriff's force a tried and trained law enforce- ment officer with a record for fearless service. The friends of Henry Behrendt, former United States marshal for this district during the World War, present his candidacy for sheriff to the people and urge his nomination. He has a record of 28 years of law enforcement behind him. In every capacity, from humble constable to United States marshal, he has served well. Mr. Behrendt has pledgeJ himself to a reorganization of the sheriff's force along police lines. He has definitely promised that he will close Wayne count y to gangdom. He has pledged his word that he will not permit gambling houses or slot machines to operate. The statute makes the sheriff the chief law enforcing officer of the county. It provides that where local police forces fail to do their duty the sheriff must act. Henry Behrendt pledges that he will co-operate fully with every police force, but he adds that when these forces neglect or refuse to enforce the law he will step into the breach. His long and unsullied record of intelligent service in the past is the best proof that he will keep his word in the future.
