Benjamin D. Burdick is Can- N rommanommagno

islature.

Among the more prominent can-
didates for the state legislature is :7.1
! Benjamin 0. Burdick, Jewish at- B
torney with offices in the Barium
' Tower.
Mr. Burdick was educated in
the public and high schools of De-
troit and at Detroit City Law
School. Ile is chancellor of Beta
' chapter of I'hi Sigma Lambda na-
tional legal fraternity and is
scribe of the national chapter. Ile
is intermediary of Detroit City ,-
Law School Alumni Association.
F;
In a statement outlining his
platform Mr. Burdick said in part: l;
"The events of the past few
weeks in Detroit
most strk ingly
point to the need of a workable ;
'gun law.' The acts now on our
statute books are laden with
'jokers' which benefit the thug ri
and gangster, filled with anti-
quilted provisions that are not ;
adaptable to the needs of today,
and a mere gesture in an unsuc-
cessful endeavor to stamp out the
illegal use Of a most dangerous in-
strumentality.
"Our present registration enact-
ments leave loopholes aplenty for
the users of sawed-off shotguns
and specially devised weapons over
30 inches long. What we need
and what we want is a single, sim-
ple law that will apply to all guns
of whatever description and of
whatever design. It is the weapon
we are after, not the design.
"A body composed of police of-
ficials, prosecuting officers and -
legislators could frame a law that
would he more than a mere ges-
ture. Their experience could dic-
tate provisions that would meet
the demand of the times and tend
to eliminate in a large measure the
present promiscuous possession
and use of a dangerous weapon."
