Rumania is today a house divided against
herself over the anti-Semitic outrages.
Those among the leaders of the Rumanian
people who are seeking to protect their
country's honor are outspoken against the
pogromists. Unfortunately, members of
various Rumanian governments were re-
sponsible for the encouragement given to
young Jew-baiters of Rumania who have
been swayed by fanaticism and hatred. The
spirit and opinion of true Rumania is W-
imps best expressed in the statement made
last week to the representative of the Jew-

Perhaps we were too lenient In the last few
months in combatting anti-Semitism but now
we see that strider measures are necessary
and we are taking them. We have made sin-
cere efforts to check anti-Semitism, but while
any government ran change the laws it cannot
rid the people of their inherited traditions.
Anti-Semitism was planted in our people by
several previous governments and we cannot be
held responsible for the thousands of anti-Se-
mitic students or even for the officials whom
previous governments inspired in their anti-
Semitism. Neither can we dismiss 300,000 state
officials in one (lay. All this requires time,
but I assure you that our present policy is to
free the country of anti-Semitism, to check
the students' agitation, and to bring the legal
status of the Jews in our country to the high-
est point.

In the news of he horrible happenings
in Rumania is cot itained the report that
"the nationalist yo uth organiaztion led by
M. Vodreanu is chi efly composed of school
boys and college at Idents." This organiza-
tion is at the head of the anti-Semitic out-
rages in Rumania.
It will be recalle !ti that during the Arab
ourages in Palestin e last year, much of the
pillage and murd ?r was done by young
Arab boys who w ere incited to crime by
fanatic leaders. P ractically all of a the nti-
Jewish riots in Hun gary, Rumania and other
European lands in past years were inspired
and led by bigoted college students,
This is the sadtl est part of all the anti-
Semitism Jewry ha s had to suffer. Woe to
the generation of which these youthful
anti-Semites may g row up to be leaders!
That Rumanian public opinion resents
the statement of Dr. Alexander Vayda
Voevocl, minister of the interior, that anti-
Semitic attacks would be stopped if Jews
outside Rumania were to encourage the ex-
tending of credit to his country, is evident
from the following indignant editorial com-
ment in Dimineatza:
Dr. Voevod's statement is extremely piquant,
especially that part in which he emphasizes
that the Jews abroad should assist in obtaining
foreign credits for Rumania. This actually
means that if the Jews abroad give us money
then we become philo-Semites. If, however,
they do not, then we are anti-Semites and we
continue to break windows in Klausenberg, we
set fires in Borscha, and we plunder in Suceava.
And this is said by such an official as the mm-
inter of the interior of our country.
Jewry's Compla hats Against Britain.
Jews have been railed to task by British
officials for comp laining and protesting
against what we cl aim to be injustices per-
petrated against u s in a partnership cre-
ated for the establis hment of the Jewish Na-
tional Home in Pa lestine. In spite of the
evasiveness of the British Colonial Office
and its failure hot lorably to discharge its
obligations to the Jewish, people, they are
not Jews alone wf ho are seeing the error
and injustice of Bri Cain's ways. Many non-
- Jewish observers a
nd students of interna-
tional politics are t iking the Jewish side in
the Palestine problc !rn which has become so
serious and painful because of the failure
of Britain to take a firm stand.
One of the best k gown European writers,
William Martin, in an article in Journal de
Geneve, made sore really serious accusa-
tions against Britain , in the course of which
he declared:
At the time when the terms of the Mandate
were fixed everybody was convinced that the
Jewish National Hom e was going to become a
living reality and so
great a thing that it ap-
peered necessary to take precautions in ad-
Vance against "Jewish Imperialism" and to pro-
vide the Arabs with guarantees against Jewish
oppression. That is why the Mandate contains
reservations, the epir it of which is similar to
those of the dispositi ors
e which protect the na-
tional minorities in lastern Europe. But by
an extraordinary con !neon, these dispositions,
the existence of whi ch prove the extent in-
tended for the Jewish National Home, are now
used in a manner qu ile the contrary of that
which they were origi rally intended to signify.
There has been deriv al from them, not a pro-
tection for Arabs age inia oppression by Jews,
but a doctrine of an ntegral status quo which
is the negation of the National bionic. For it
is impossible to cone iliate mobility with he-
mobility.
We declare that th i s attitude of the British
government is an inju 'slice. Solemn and pre-
ciao promises have be en mode to Jews. They
have been authorized to clear with their money
and their sweat the P romised Land which had
become partially dese rt, as a result of many
centuries of Turkish r Ile; they have sent there
100,000 of their sons and have put into this
miserly and greedy e arth 40 million pounds
sterling, one milliard of our francs. They
have preached to the whole of their youth a
great ideal, turning th non aside from the social
revolution. Now, som eine will come and tell
them: "Gentlemen, th s experience lasted long
enough! No further ad mittance!"
As Talleyrand said, it is more than a crime
—it is a mistake. It i more than an injustice
—it is an imprudence Five hours after the
withdrawal of the im migration permits was
made known in Jerusal m, the Jews of Chicago
were already demons :rating in the streets
against England. Thu t is a serious warning.
Do the English think th at they have not enough
difficulties in the world ; do they want on their
hands 15,000,000 of Je ws? But that is their
own business.
This affair has vet a graver aspect, which is
of interest to all Euro; e. There must not be
committed in the Orie, t this last fault which
will show that prizes ar s given for revolutions.
The Arabs will hencefo -th know that it is suf-
ficient to kill a few Je ws in order to obtain
from England all they oss ant. Unhappy people,
do you not see that yo a are putting into the
hands of your enemies t he firebrand which will
set fire to your own ho Ise?

The Situation in Rumania.
And the Vitiorul joins this sentiment
when it states:
What does this mean? May we conclude
that the government maintains a well-organ-
ized plan for anti-Semitic agitation under the
slogan "give us money or we give you anti-
Semitism"?

Meanwhile the danger for our people has
not yet passed. Panfil Sheikers, editor of
the Cuvantul, a pro-Carol paper and a mem-
ber of Parliament, writes:
We have definite information that anti-Se-
mitic outbreaks of a violent nature will recur
in the autumn. Dr. Vayda Voevod, speaking
to the - correspondent of the Jewish Telegraphic
Agency, made assurances for order which we
consider sincere, although we think they came
too late.
If the government is really ready to show
active will-power it ought to do it in such a
way that nothing shall happen, even in the
future, otherwise the expected anti-Jewish
events in the fall may lead to such anarchy
that Dr. Vayda Voevod will not be able to sup-
press it even with military force.
Two things must be done at once by Jew-
ish communities everywhere: Jewry's voice
must be heard against the repetition of the
outrages perpetrated in Rumania, and
Jewry's aid must be extended to the thou-
sands who are suffering at the hands of Ru-
mania's barbarians.

He consulted one specialist after

FLITIJRE OF THE NEW PALES-
MR. CHARLES II. JOSEPH
"A PIOUS FRAUD"
Students of Jewish history need not be re-
minded of the ancient Amide's who fought
Israel at Birfidim, in the hope of wiping him
out root and branch. We had also Haman,
the prototype of Amalek, who had equally
played an ignoble role in history, although
eventually he was discomfitted by Esba
him. Then we had the Pfeferkorns galore, who
had exhibited brutal callousness to Israel's suf-
ferings and who passed away with the inscrip-
tions of Moshley on their tombstones, namely,
Shem resha'im yirkah! Unfortunately, the list
of informers has not yet been closed: Israel is
still a victim of his own inner implacable foes
who seek to trouble hint and undermine his
existence. For some years past there have
been a number of moserim hailing mostly from
the "Liberal" wing, who tried to hurt National
Judaism by taking crafty counsel against Israel
saying, "Come, let us exterminate them from
being a nation, so that the name of Israel be no
more in remembrance." (Psalms.) Some such
devices are being contrived today by a coterie
of so-called "liberal" Jews who have an innate
hatred of Zion and Zionists, and who dislike to
see Israel ending his national homelessness and
conquering the exile and the dark forces with
which he is beset. Our attention has lately
been drawn to some scurrilous diatribes by
CHARLES H. JOSEPII, a member of a Reform
synagogue in Pittsburgh. The latter had the
astounding courage to attack the Zionists and
their aspirations in his syndicated weekly con-
tributions (which we are sorry to say wero
published without reservation in several Jewish
weeklies), which stamps the writer thereof as
a man of unsound principle and an informer
worthy of the most rabid anti-Semite.

IN THE PUBLIC EYE
Joseph Stein, prominent Jewish merchant of Milwaukee and a
member of Temple Emenu-E1 b'ne Jeshrun, has been reappointed by
Mayor Daniel !loan as a member of the Milwaukee Board of Police and
Fire Commissioners. Mr. Stein, who has held this office since 1924,
has been appointed for another term of five years.
Nat Ferber, author of "New York," is back at work on the New
York American after a grand trip abroad, during which he was rumored
playing host in a somewhat elegant castle in France. Rumors have it
that he is toying with a perfectly lovely offer from Hollywood.
Horace Liveright, noted Jewish book publisher and producer of
several stage successes, is forsaking the humdrum book-publishing busi-
ness for the lure of Hollywood, where he will become associated with
the Paramount studios as novel and play adviser. We've said he was
a genius, though when we said it once to one of his authors the some-
what ironic man retorted, "Yea, and like most geniuses he's half crazy."
