How Much Will You Give?

Detroit Jews who feel their responsibili-
ties toward the forthcoming Allied Jewish
Campaign for $305,000 must be giving seri-
ous thought to the question of how much
they should give as their share lot his drive.
In forming a decision on this important
question, the Jews of this city should re-
member that for the first time this cam-
paign represents a grouping of all forces
and practically all causes. Whereas in
previous years we had separate campaigns
for Palestine, for European relief, for He-
brew education, for the Hebrew Sheltering
and Immigrant Aid Society, and for numer-
ous other causes, the Allied Jewish Cam-
paign eliminates the need for a multitude
of drives.
Contributors must, therefore, give as if
there were a number of drives, by remem-
bering that a number of important causes
are represented, and that they are obligated
not to one campaign but to many causes and
institutions. Those who are mindful of their
responsibilities in the campaign will not
take advantage of the joint drive to reduce
their donations, but will instead give in one
lump sum the amounts they would ordi-
narily give in response to several appeals
for several causes.

Soviet News—Highly Seasoned.

In Detroit, the Ford metropolis, hundreds
of thousands of workers demonstrated. The
police ruthlessly drove barricaded street can
and buses into the crowd to break up the pro-
cession. Wild battles ensued. The demon-
strants overturned street cars and used them
as barricades. About a dozen fell seriously
wounded, but the police also had material
losses.

But a much better kick is to be gotten
out of a Communist description of the per-
sonality and activities of Dr. Stephen S.
Wise. A Jerusalem friend of the rabbi of
the Free Synagogue of New York writes
Dr. Wise of a half hour's amusement
brought to the Holy City from Odessa in
Yiddish. In this 'ilk a call to action was
sounded against ' e black battalions ar-
ranged against the 'ommunists by the cap-
italists," and in the urse of the address
Dr. Wise was thus described :

But Rabbi Stephen Wise, whom I met in
San Francisco in 1916, is altogether a different
type—tall, clean-shaven, the man who endeav-
ors and succeeds to bring the fatted American
capitalist to the block folds of religion, who
smokes Havana cigars Saturdays and week-
days, whose effort is only limited to an automo-
bile trip on Sunday to the magnificent temple
in which two or three thousand moneybags
await him, where he delivers his 35-minute
weekly sermon, at the end of which he raises
his diamond-bedecked hands and with difficulty
pronounces the only two words he knows in
Hebrew, "Bruchim Ila-baim," in which his
audience sees the whole context of religion,
and who then motions not to a few small town
chazanim but to a chorus of conservatory-
trained young girls to begin the musical pro-
gram of the service. Do you know what he
does the rest of the time? Ile gambles in Wall
street, he sits in councils for finding ways of
defeating communism. . . . If our dear cause
of communism is to remain intact, we must
wipe out every Mired of this in our beloved
country.

THAT WHITE HOUSE LIBRARY
It behooves us as an assidu

chronicler of unimportant Jew ..h
news to take note of this library
which the book publishers .,f
America have presented to the
White House.
Among the Jewish authors, I
listed, are Fanny Hurst, Edna Fer-
ber, Philip Guedella, Louis Unt ■ r-
fiver, Walter Lippman, Andre Mau-
rois and Emil Ludwig. And 1 pre-
sume we have at least a 50 per
cent claim on Montaigne, t he
French essayist, and Bret Harte,
American novelist, for both of
these were Jewish on one side of
their ancestry. Guedella leads the
Jewish authors by having two of
his works, "Fathers of the Repub-
lic" and the "Second Empire," rep-
resented. Yes, I have omitted an-
other Jewish author, Louis Stam-
ford, whose "Sticks and Stones" is
in the White House list.

A READER living in Chicago sends me a clipping

of an article from a church paper called St.
Peter's Net, published by St. Peter's Church in Chi-
cago. It refers to the gift of Adolph Ochs of two
Menorahs to the Cathedral of St. John the Divine,
New York City. I have already discussed this and
can only repeat that to my mind there has been a
considerable amount of useless and unfair criticism
indulged in by rabbis and others of what I consider
to have been a perfectly proper good-will gesture
from a prominent, liberal-minded Jew tic a great
Christian institution. It is interesting to recall that
a number of large contributions to the building
fund of the Cathedral was made by several promi-
nent Jew's of New York. The church paper in com-
menting on Mr. Ochs' gift said:
