of prohibition of land sales, would also be
the Arabs. But for Jewish aspirations in
Palestine it would spell suicide.
There is another danger. In the assem-
bly that would be formed with representa-
tion from all the cantons, the Arabs would
inevitably be in the majority. What if this
assembly rule to shut Palestine's doors to
Jewish immigration? Ittamar Ben Avi,
the father of the cantonization idea, would
not be so proud of his plan under such a
scheme of things.
There is yet another danger. Jerusalem
is not included in the Tel Aviv region which,
according to the plan, is to be known as
"Judea." What if Jerusalem is to be
thrown in with a section that is thickly
populated with Arabs, and is made a part
of an Arab canton? Then the Jewish ma-
jority of Jerusalem will be subjected to the
rule of Moslems, and the sanctity of Jeru-
salem as the "Ir Shalom," the City of Peace
of the Jewish people, will be trampled un-
der foot.
Unless Jewish rights to free immigration
and unhampered land purchase are hon-
ored, and unless "self-government" should
be made to spell opportunity for Jewish
colonization in proportion to the absorb-
tive power of the land, new schemes for
ruling Palestine should be examined with
suspicion.

OFFICIALLY RECOGNIZED
Ever forward, 0 hand of Pro-
gress—or is it, feet of Progress!
Mark down another great achieve-
ment. The word "kibitzer" has
been officially admitted into the dic-
tionary.
Frank H. Vizetelly in the Stan-
dard dictionary thus defines the
word which has been translated
from the poker table to the schol-
arly pages of the "Worterbuch."
Kibitzer: One who meddles with
other person's affairs—especially a
person, who although, not a player,
makes suggestions and gives grat-
uitous advice to card players.
Now, you can take the old word
and use it in anagrams and cross
word puzzles, and if a college pro-
fessor doesn't know what it means
--you can just tell him, he's plain
ignorant and better go study his
dictionary.

DR. ROBERT E. NAUN1BURG of Winchester,

By DAVID SCHWARTZ

51

b' ' .'6 ° '

Mass., a reader of this column, writes to correct
a statement appearing in the New York Times that
he is a German citizen. He was born in this coun-
try and bus lived here all his life. There is a
r( ason for this correction. Dr. Naumburg has in-
vented a device known as the visagraph, by means
of which automatic reading aloud may be brought
to the blind. Taking the same principle by which
the wavy little line at the side of a talkie film is
reproduced in sound, Dr. Naumberg's machine
records in sound what it sees on the printed page.
The essential feature of the device is an exceed-
ingly thin band of light, long enough to reach from
the top to the bottom of a line of type. The band
is moved along the line of type across the page.
When it strikes the black part there is, naturally,
no reflection. Where it strikes the white surface
of the page, however, it is reflected and this reflec-
tion, by means of light sensitive electric cells, is
transformed into current, which in turn produces
sound. This is such an amazing invention and of
such tremendous value to the blind that Dr. Naum-
burg has indeed made a great contribution to sci-
ence. Dr. Naumburg writes me that "for the benefit
of the blind and their friends I would like to say
that I have been working continuously on this
device since the new York demonstration almost
two years ago, and hope it will not be many months
until I will be able to complete a much more highly
perfected and practical model of the visagraph."
Thus will another American Jew have rendered
a service to afflicted humanity.

In the cantonization of Palestine there is
the danger that Arab landowners, who are
now only too glad to sell to Jews land which
lies waste and which Jews stand ready to
convert into garden spots out of love for
the land that is Eretz Israel, would be pre-
vented from disposing of their property
rights to Jews. This would be an injustice
not to Jews alone, but to the country at
large, because in most instances the Holy
Land has been cursed into becoming a wil-
derness, except where Jews came to build
what has been destroyed by Arabs. Suf-

celebrity, to whom its receiving, while grati-
fying of course, would not necessarily mean
very much by way of encouragement to a con-
tinuance of Jewish service (for the reason that
his previous activities have already proced his
interest in serving the Jewish cause), but would
rather make it to a Jew who in a more limited
and quiet way has nevertheless contributed
something of true value to the Jewish people.
Such, it seems to me, might be viewed the
service of such a man as Mr. Frankel. If
therefore your committee would determine this
year to make the award to him or to some
other Jew of lesser renown than the celebrities
already known, it would seem to me that this
action would, in the long run. serve the cause
of our people far more effectively and cumula-
tively because of the incentive thus given to
other Jews, of less fame, to devote themselves
or to continue to devote themselves to 'selfless
Jewish service. In a 'sentence, it seems to me
that the example to the whole body of Ameri-
