hopeful Jewish greeting, "Next
Year in Jerusalem," this author,
Al Ceorges Ilelsley of the staff of
I,e Journal, calls his book "Last
Year in Jerusalem." I wouldn't
say he is less thorough in his exam-
ination of Palestine's problems
than his confrere Londres, he is
indeed more concerned with Pal-
estine than with drawing a picture
of conditions under which the
Jewries of Eastern Europe exist
as Mr. Londres did. But M. lints-
ley is frankly pessimistic. He
sees a repetition of the August dis-
turbances looming very large on
the horizon. And next time, he
says, the Jews will count their vic-
tims by the thousands instead of
by the hundreds, as was the case
in 1929. This would be a dismal
outlook, if it were not that M.
Ilalsley's is but one man's prog-
nosis. True enough, he is a
trained observer. But things never
happen as we dread them or wish
for them. It is not my desire to
minimize the gravity of Judeo-
Arabic relations in the holy Land.
I am fully aware of the danger of
hatred taking root and becoming
ineradicable. Nothing, it seems,
finds a home in the hearts of men
more quickly than hatred. Force
and weapons of war will not de-
stroy it, but to the contrary only
intensify its virulence. That is
why, pending an equitable settle-
ment by the mandatory power of
mutual claims and aspirations of
the two peoples in Palestine, the
present Palestinian-Jewish attitude
of continuing to do good to their
Arab neighbors ran but carry away
the approbation and sympathy of
every right-minded man. Doing
good to the Arabs, healing their
diseases, helping them directly and
indirectly by introducing better
agricultural methods and school-
ing, and this in spite of evil propa-
gandists and malicious unrest strik-
ers, is the foundation on which the
Jewish homeland of the future
will arise. For that (outstation is
justice, against which, we firmly
believe, the gates of hell them-
selves cannot prevail.

Under this plan, a pupil ad
minces steadily, assignment by as-
signment. The slow child may fin
ish only part of his assignment,
while the clever child may at the
same time finish two assignments.
In introducing the plan into the
High School of the United Ilebrew
Schools, the Talmud Torahs were
principally motivated by the desire,
to create for the pupil an atmos-
phere of learning such as was prev-
alent in the Yeshivoths. The pri-
mary duty of the teacher will not
be to impart knowledge, whether,
the child is disposed to receive it'
or not, but rather to render assist-
ance, to guide. There is a Tal-
mudic maxim that "A student does
not succeed in his studies unless he
pursuits that study which his heart
desires."
The student's desire then must
be respected. If he is interested to
continue his study of the Chu-
nosh, for instance, let him do so.
Ile will write his composition when
he will have an inclination to do so.
The subjects pursued in the He-
brew High School, such as, the Bi-
ble, history, grammar, etc., were
divided and subdivided into the
proper monthly, weekly, and daily
assignments. Each pupil knows ex-
folly what his goal is and, know-
ing also the amount of time at his
disposal, he titans, with the aid of
the teacher, his daily work. Ile
may if he wishes devote all of the
time to one subject until he has
completed his full assignment on
that subject and then start a new
subject or he may KO proportion
his assignments as to include two
or more subjects in the work of
each day. The teacher's assist-
ance is always forthcoming if
asked for, that is, it comes at a
time when it is actually valued.
This plan, however, does not pre-
clude entirely the formal lessons
given by the teacher. These lessons
are given at certain intervals when
the group is mostly in need of
them. -
The High School of the United
Hebrew Schools is in session each
day from 0:30 p. m. to 8:30 p. no.
in the Philadelphia branch, and
whoever is interested either in the
Hebrew High School in general or
in this plan and its adaptation in
particular is always welcome.

Passover Message
to the
fewish People
Israel's liberation from the en-
slavement of Egyptian Pharaohs
is an inspiring chapter in the his-
tory of mankind. The Ten Com-
mandments, given to the Chosen
People, are even, in our enlight-
ened age, the cardinal principles
of humanity. Passover teaches a
lesson not only to the children of
Israel, but to the civilized world
—it brings home to all thinking
men that freedom and light and
righteousness will triumph.
It is fitting that the Jews who
have suffered so much, and still
are suffering in some countries,
should dedicate one of their holi-
days in commemoration of their
hour of liberty and freedom.
It is all fitting that Passover
should come in the Spring of the
year. When freedom fills the
very air and high hope dwells in
every heart, it is the proper time
for commemorating the libera-
tion of an enslaved people. Minds
and hearts are in tune with the
sentiments of the occasion.
We send Passover Greetings
to our Jewish friends and neigh-
bors in the spirit of this great fes-
tival, when the hosts of liberty,
light and justice have defeated
the forces of oppression, dark-
ness and iniquity.
