to bring in the next course, take a paper and pencil and
figure out for yourself how much each of the 25 institutions
sponsored by Federation received from these unusually lib-
eral purchasers of charity.
Adolph Finsterwald, the chairman of the Detroit Serv-
ice Group, has just handed me a list of the objections used
to keep down the high cost of giving. I know 'em all,'
Adolph. Every one of them is a veteran in the G. A. R.—
' the Grand Army of Refusers.
Here they come! Hats off to the poor old wheezes as
they make their asthmatic way along the line of march.
Ah, there's an old friend! You know him: "If that fellow
gives only $1,000, I'm liberal when I give $25." Anti right
behind him comes another favorite: "I don't believe in
I organized charity; I want to enjoy the satisfaction of giv-
I ing personally." Groans sweep the line of spectators, and
I look up to see who is the recipient of this demonstration.
A veteran of many campaigns comes marching along. He
is a universal favorite: "I have realatives in Europe." And
' right behind him comes: "I don't believe in private charity.
The State should provide for the poor." And bringing
up the rear is: "I have done my duty in this community,
now I am going to let somebody else take up the burden."
Now men and women of the Jewish community of De-
troit, can't you understand that if the Federation—the
foundation of your 25 charity structures, isn't strong
enough to support them, that you will either have to
strengthen the Federation or reduce the number of institu-
. tions it supports.
