VOL. XXIX. NO. 14.

Announcement is made that Na-
than Straus, "grand old nun of
American Jewry," and Lieut. Gov .
Herbert II. Lehman have agreed to
act as honorary chairman of the
Allied Jewish Campaign, together
with Mr. Warburg, and that lead-
ing men and women throughout the
country, whose names will he made
public shortly, have agreed to act
as vice-chairmen.
With every indication already
that it will be the most significant
and representative gathering in the
history of American Jewry, accep-
tances, which are still being re-
ceived front leaders in Jewish work
in every part ofthe United States,
of invitations to participate, the
national' conference of the Allied
Jewish Campaign at Washington
on Saturday evening, March a, and
the following (lay, will be the larg-
est Jewish national meeting ever
held in this (officiary, according to
a statement issued from the cam-
paign's headquarters, 115 Lexing-
ton avenue, New York City.
The acceptances 1111'011(1V received
it was stated at headquarters, are
a veritable "cross-section" of Amer-
ican Jewish life, and the number
already received is in excess to the
number of acceptances received at
the same time in advance of any
prior national conference. This is
the more extraordinary, it has been
pointed out by the leaders of the
Allied Jewish Campaign, in view
of fears t hat were expressed in
SOM. quarters that financial con-
ditions were such in this country
that few people would want to he
associated with a fund-raising cam-
paign. No such pessimism, it was
declared, has made itself apparent
to the campaign chairmen, Paul
Baerwald, David M. Bressler,
Judge William M. Lewis, and Mor-
ris Rothenberg, who have been
greatly encouraged nut only by the
number of acceptances, but also by
the control, co-operative spirit man-
ifest in to illy letters which have ac-
cempanied many of them.
Already preparati ons for
"drives" for the Allied Jewish
Campaign are under way in several
communities. Credit for being the
first community actually to get un-
der way, goes to Detroit, where Mr.
Bressler, who was introduced by
Judire Henry Butziol, delivered an
address on the purposes of the Al-
lied Jewish Campaign on Sunday
evening, Feb. 16, before•the serv-
ice group of the Jewish Welfare
Federation. Its membership in-
cludes the hest elements of the
community, including Orthodox,
Reform, Zionist and non-'Zionist.
A quota of $125,000 was accepted
for Detroit. The "drive," which is
also for the local federation, will
take place the latter part of April,
and there is confidence here and at
the headquarters of the Allied Jew--
1A Campaign that it will succeed.
Announcement was made at
headquarters that arrangements
have been completed with the
trunk-line railroads whereby per-
sons going to the national confer-
'ernoe, which will be held in the Ho-
a. I Washington, will enjoy a spec-
