ONCE ANTI-SEMITE
NOW JEWS' FRIEND
Professor Jorga, Rumanian
Statesman, Arrives
in U. S.
NEW YORK. — Prof. Nicholas
Jorge, Rumanian historian and
statesman and president of Bucha-
rest University, arrived Monday on
the Italian liner Roma to lecture in
the United Sties. Although a for-
mer leader in the anti-Semitic
mcvenient, Professor Jorga is now
friendly to the Jews and was hear-
tily welcomed by Jewish leadqrs
when the liner reached her pier.
Among those Who net him was
Carol Davila, Rumanian minister
to Washington, who went down the
bay to board the Roma at Quaran-
tine. Others included George Bon-
cesco and Jacob Rosenthal, ad-
visers to the Rumanian legation.
Professor Jorga explaned his
change of viewpoint on the Jewish
question by saying that until the
time he severed his connection with
anti-Semitic groups the competi-
tion between Jews and Christians
was bitter and that the Jews had
almost complete control of trade.
Ile felt then, that he had no other
course but to take a stand against
them.
Now, he added, Rumania has he-
come a greater country with op-
portunity for all creeds and all
classes and all classes feel the need
for working together toward na-
'
tional advancement. Above every-
thing else, Professor Jorga said, he
is for peace.
