The library first came into ex-
istence through the efforts of the
Alumni Association of the United
Hebrew Schools. While the bur-
den of the upkeep was soon shift-
ed to the shoulders of the schoo1,1
the assoeiation was for a long time
forthcoming wit h financial aid.
From time to time the library has
been the recipient of generous gifts
from prominent individuals. Among
, the recent gifts is one from Fred
M. Butzol.

The shelves of the library offer
books of many types. The nil-
' mud, its literature, the products of
the post-Talmudic days, the philo-
sophical works of the later ages,
the modern literature of today in
Prose and poetry—all these are to
be had. 1Vhile sufficient impor-
tance is attached to the works of
old, primary emphasis is laid on
modern Hebrew literature. For
modern Hebrew literature serves
as a bridge between the reader and
the modern Hebrew tongue.
Although the library makes no
direct purchase of either Yiddish
of English books, several hundred
of these have been presented to the
library. Outstanding among these
are complete sets of the works of '
Peretz and Sholom Aleichem, pr o .
