That eight constables were en- mezed in searching the house of a Jew, named Shapiro, while the butchery was at its height in Sated, where eight Jews were killed, 30 wounded, and the Jewish quarters razed, was revealed dur- ing the cross-examination of Cap- tain Farraday, superintendent of police at Sated, before the session of the parliamentary commission of inquiry. This was admitted by Captain. Farraday, at the same time that he conceded that Safed was inade- quately protected, that the authori- ties had refused to send him re-' inforcements, and that he knew of the imminence of an outbreak for days before it occurred. A report emanating from Syria alleges that Jews were arrested for attempting to smuggle guns inito Palestine. The propos:II which is being put forth that Jews remain away front the Wailing Wall until the question of what constitutes the status quo is settled is opposed by Chief Rabbi A. J. Kook. The sugges- ti o n has been put forth in some quarters as a means of preventing the Arabs from claiming provoca-. tuon. In a press interview Rabbi Kook declared that he strongly opposes any suggestion that Jews refrain temporarily train visiting the Wailing Wall. OVER DISARMING OF JEWS Ussishkin Coming to U. S. LONDON.—(J. T. A.) — A stormy scene occurred Wednesday in the House of Commons over the question of the disarming of the British-Jewish constabulary during the recent outbreaks in Palestine. lames de Rothschild asked the gov- ernment what steps had been taken in regard to the disarming and dismissal of the British-Jewish spe- cial constables in Jerusalem dur- ing the Arab excesses. Ile pointed out that the disarming and dis- missal of the Jewish constables was a violation of their constitu- tional rights because the only reason for this dismissal was the fact that they are Jews. Ile fur- ther pointed out that the insult' was particularly keen because their dismissal took place during a public parade. William Lunn, under-secretary of state fur the colonies, replied that he has received protests from the British Jews in Jerusalem that the government did not consider it necessary to take steps in this matter. Major Nathan, Locker- Lampson and Sir Archibald Sin- clair rose and asked excitedly whether it is really true that the British Jews have been disarmed, but the Labor members iinterrupt- ed their questions by loud shouts, until the speaker re-established order. Mr. l.unn did not offer any further explanation. Figures of Casualties. The figures of the casualties in the Palestine riots and the num- ber of those tried and sentenced for participating in the outbreak were made available to the (louse of Commons by Under Secretary Lunn. Replying to a question of How- ard Berry, Lunn said 008 Arab and 06 Jewish cases were dealt with summarily; 5$ Arabs and 10 Jews were sentenced by the district courts. Twenty-six Arabs and no Jews were dealt with in the criminal assizes courts. Until Oct. 20, 5 per cent of all the Arabs tried were sentenced to death but the sentences under appeal as pro- vided by the l'alestine law. While these figures are up until Oct. 27, they do nut include persons com- mitted to trial by the district or criminal assizes courts. Discussing the casualties, Lunn stated that up until Aug. 31, 83 Moslems, 4 Christians, 109 Jews were killed or died from wounds, while 122 Moslems, 10 Christians, 183 Jews were wounded besides the outpaitients, who are not re- corded. Ile stated that he does not possess figures subsequent to Aug. :II, but that he believes that few casualties have occurred since. Replying to a query by Captain Joseph Wedgwood, Lunn stated that the Palestine police force con- sisted of 211 Jews and 1,120 Arabs, including non-British Christians. The Transjordania police force consisted of 27 Jews and •41 Arabs, and that the Transjordania police force con- sists-1 of 27 Jews and 441 Arabs, and that the Transjordania police wote available to Palestine.
