Ex.King Manuel of Portugal WOMEN'S LEAGUE
WILL
Makes Amends.
GIVE MUSICAL OCT. 23

Former King Manuel of Portu-
gal, in a special article appearing
in the current, New Year's issue
of The American Hebrew, of which
Rabbi Isaac Landman is editor, af-
ter four centuries makes amends
for a wrong committed by one of
his forebears in the days of Colum-
bus. Among the Jews when were
banished from Portugal in 14 1J8 was
the famous astrologer and mathe-
matician, Abraham Zacuto who
may be regarded as the Einstein
of his day. It was Zacuto's famous

in the possession of the present ex-
mona•ch of Portugal, who pays
tribute. ten Zacuto, declaring that it
was that Jewish scietist "who pre-
pared the way for Portugal to
reach the zenith of tier glory."
Manuel, who bears the name of
the famous ancestor whose roved
ingratitude was visited upon Za-
ng°, gives a vivid account of Zni-
cutee's importance in the history of
his.country. It is also of interest
to know that former King alanuel
