PAGE SIX I II ti Th.TROYF JEWISR /IRON tat THE JEWS OF MOROCCO Rosh Hashonah Greetings Extended to All My Jewish Clientele and Friends A News Letter from Tangier. By ISRAEL SHECHTER When Ahmed de Marango guided I us through the Jewish quarter of Tangier, lying to the north of the Gran Socco or Moorish market place, he detailed his own opinion of the Jew. Ahmed could neither read nor write, but as he himself reiterated, he knew everything. He had picked up a speaking knowledge of French, Spanish and English besides his native Moor- ish in the Tangier gutters where he grew up—and a smattering of local history. Ile is one of the best guides in the city. When Ahmed spoke of the Tangier Jew in lance yet eloquent English, I had a dreadful recollection of college ac- quaintances slurring the Jews be- fore me, not knowing Ilse to be one of them, and of a wealthy New carpenter of Italian ex- traction damning his more econom- ical Jewish competitors from the Bronx. A.B. SEE ELEVATORS "They put their money in here," said Ahmed pointing to his bosom, "and keep their hand on it all of the time. Once in a week they eat a half pound meat, once in six weeks a chicken. They spend noth- ing, but make business. They get a fine house, fittest in all Tangier, and live big." A Nrtu tear ffirsgagr On the eve of the Jewish New Year, we extend to the Jewish people of Detroit and Michigan our hearty congratulations upon the great measure of peace and prosperity which the old year has brought, our best wishes for the New Year and especially our sense of satisfaction in the, increasing observance by your people of this ancient festival and all that it implies. The great Jewish traditions should be preserved not only as a source of pride and satisfaction to your own people but also as a reminder of the great contribu- tion which such a people can make and should make to the development and enrichment of American life. It affords us great pleasure to wish you all a very Happy and Prosperous New Year. A. B. See Elevator Co., Inc. 56 Henry Street Detroit, Mich. Or else, according to Ahmed, they go themselves or send their sons to America, do business there, and save up a great deal of money. Then they do come back to Tan- gier and deal in foreign exchange and multiply their fortunes rapid- ly. As a matter of fact, the first Jew we met in Tangier—it was be- fore Ahmed had guided us about the city—was a young money- changer. lie revealed himsalf a Jew when I looked curiously at his name spelled out in Latin, Arabic and Hebrew characters, Ile was but a few yards from the British bank, and on the day when the : ban kwas exchanging 6.60 pesetas for one dollar, he was offering 6 and curiously enough, getting it. Resemble Mohammedans. Meanwhile we had had opportun- ity in our rambling walks through the serpentine lanes of this ancient town to gain at least a superficial knowledge of the Jew and the pe- culiar environment in which he finds himself. Tangier is a Moroc- can seaport of about 50,000 people, of whom half are Jews and Chris- tians and the rest Moors—Berbers and their Arab conquerors after centuries of intermingling. We learned later that there were about 1(1,0(10 Jews in Tangier. During I the first night and morning we found it inmosible to distinguish I between Jew and Moor and Jew and Spaniard. Those in native cos- tume of ragged burnouse and heel- less sandals could not be told apart from the Moors in similar dress. They were equally unkempt and dirty. Men dressed in European clothes passed for Spaniard or Frenchman. For all we could tell there were no Jews in Tangier. Then we discerned a tell-tale mark. The Moor or Arab wears a red fez if still a bachelor and a turban if married. The Jew in native costume is marked by his • small, flat skull-cap.
