New Years is a time for soul searching, not alone
for the individual, but for the community. !Lave we,
singly and collectively, rounded out a year of service
and growth? Have we given evidence of vision, of
understanding of our community needs, and of the
necessary sacrifice of energy and money to satisfy
those needs? What have we in this last year given
to Detroit Jewry?
We may have a synagogue or two more in the
city, but how many of us have actually made religion
our business or our problem? We have a few more
children in our Sunday schools and Hebrew schools,
but how many of us have interested ourselves in the
dissemination of Ilebrelv culture? We may have a
few more orphans in our Orphan's Home and a few
more old folks in our home for the aged, but how many
of us know or care under what conditions they are
being housed? We may have a few more classes in
our Young Woman's Hebrew Association, but how
many of the Jews in the city are interested in provid-
ing for these hundreds of young men and women—
the future Jewish citizens—an adequate home for
wholesome, happy activities?
There are in the city thousands of Jews who are
intelligent, who are generous, who are sympathetic,
who are good citizens—fine, ethically and mentally.
And yet the smallest number of us, perhaps not more
than one-half of one per cent of these thousands, are
interested in the development of a better and higher
communal Jewish life.
If we are passing judgment upon ourselves, we
must acknowledge that we have in this year, as a
community, not solved many major problems; have
not in fact helped the few who have tried to solve
them. We have within ourselves the possibilities for
a splendid Jewish community—we have the material
and the money. We need only more vision. May
we in the next year be tried and not found wanting!

The Rutenberg power station at Haifa, pictured above, was threatened by Arab bandits during the
recent l'alestine outrages. It was defended by Jewish workers.
The Haifa power station on the slopes of historic Mount Carmel, one of the three electric generating
plants of the Rutenberg Concession, by harne§sing the Jordan River, electrifies the Holy Land and fur-
nishes light for its cities and power for its industrial enterprises. Other power stations are already in
operation in Tiberias and Tel Aviv.

PROSPECTS FOR COMING
YEAR ARE VERY BRIGHT

By DR. JOHN SLAWSON
Executive Director, Jewish Welfare Federation

The three events—formation of the World Jewish
Agency, the Palestinian disaster, and the death of
Louis Marshall, have occurred in such rapid succes-
sion as to make one gasp and wonder what to antici-
pate during the coming year. All three everts, how-
ever. point to a year of arduous labor and persistent
continuance of what was initiated a few months ago
at Zurich.
Marshall's death implies that more now than ever
before are the leaders among American Jewry obliged
to come to the front and assume the responsibility of
leadership with seriousness in order that our tre-
mendous loss may, at least in a measure, be lessened.
The atrocities in Palestine which have called forth the
sympathies of the world for the Jew, in a manner
rarely experienced in Jewish history, should and will
strengthen the intention of building our homeland
and unifying American and World Jewry even in a
greater measure than ever before. These occur-
rences make it incumbent upon usffo carry to fruition
the objectives crystalized only a few months ago, af-
ter so many years of striving and planning, and as a
result of the exercise of almost superhuman patience.
Locally, there are many problems before us and
needs to be met during the coming year. The out-
standing need in our community at this time is a Jew-
ish Community center where the young men and wo-
men, together with their parents, will find a place of
recreation, of self-expression, of wholesome associa-
tion—a source for the development of the personality
through physical. mental, social and spiritual chan-
nels and through Jewish associational contacts.
The present recreational quarters are utterly in-
adequate and inharmonious with the material re-
sources of our community. The devotion and loyalty
displayed by workers at the Jewish Center on Mel-
bourne and at the Y. W. II. A. on Rowena, and their
undaunted effort to serve our youth and children in
spite of the obstacle of cramped, inadequate, and
undesirable quarters. are indeed encouraging. One
look at our two makeshift social rewreational centers
should be to the communally alert individual a painful
experience and even a superficial comparison with
the developments in Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Chicago,
Newark, and a host of other Jewish communities in
the United States, should elicit a feeling of shame in
any one possessing even a minimum amount of com-
munal pride. The gift of Mr. Samuel X. Gaylord for
a Jewish Community Center is a very gratifying epi-
sode and one that insures the beginning of the devel-
opment of this much needed facility next spring.
There is also needed in the community an improve-
ment in the attitude toward Jewish education and a
realization of its significence in the life of our peo-
ple and in the wholesome development-of our chil-
dren. Already have steps been taken to adjust the
situation so that a more harmonious relationship be-
tween the community, as such, and our Jewish educa-
tional system might be established. Some of our most
valuable Federation leaders are assisting in this en-
deavor in which the Hebrew School Board is co-op-
erating magnificently.
Of the more fundamental social service activities
such as family welfore, child care, and health, suffi-
cient basic thinking and doing have been effected
during the past year to release energy for the larger
and all-embracing communal enterprises.
There are developing and coming to the fore-
front a number of new leaders in the community with
potentialities and seriousness of purpose that augur
well for the enrichment and elevation of our com-
munal life. For this we are grateful. The prospects
for the coming year are indeed bright and promising.
