This is the season of spiritual stock-taking. This is
the season when thoughtful and high-minded Jewish
people look into their souls, and take counsel with their
own hearts.
We wish them the vision to see the truth, strength to
face it, and determination to make the coming year
more successful than all the preceding years in the
material, moral and spiritual sense.
We also wish the Jewish people, everywhere, a
happy and prosperous new year.

Situated in the center of Cleveland's most congested neighborhood, known to the Cleveland poi ce
as the "Roaring Third Precinct," the Jewish Orphan Home, occupying the same buildings for more than
a half century, has been sold to the city of Cleveland and the new buildings are now in the course of con-
struction. The old orphanage is pictured below.
Architect's sketch of the cottage-type building now being erected on a 30-acre tract in the Uni-
versity Heights settlement, Cleveland, for the Jewish Orphan Home of Districts 6 and 2, I. 0. B. B. Ten
cottages will house 25 children each under the care and supervision of a cottage mother. There will also
be buildings for administration, recreation, and religious worship. The new home has been designed by a
graduate of the institution and members of the home's alumni association have subscribed more than
'$200,000 to the new building fund campaign now being waged through the middle west. The above pho-

tograph sketches the planned buildings.

Ile answers that all this is really
because she, Feigalle, "loves him
like a brother."
"Ha! Ila! Ha!" laughs Feigballe
"What else do you want—that I
should hate you?"
"No!" I want you to love me,
but not like a brother."
"How then?" and Feigalle
laughs louder still.
"Like a betrothed," he answers
seriously. "Because I love you
like a betrother."
Once he told her that his par-
ents had asked the match-maker
to make up a match for him. And
this was being done. But he want-
ed to hear nothing, and know noth-
ing of it. But if she, Feigalle, told
him that she loved him not like a
brother, he would ask the match-1
maker to talk with her father on I
his, Hirshalle's, behalf.
Feigalle laughed again.
She
told him that he was a "little
fool."
And Ilirshalle went away from
her with his head lowered, and an
unhappy, broken heart. And,
although he did not cease feeling
at home in her house, he did not
seek of his happiness any more.
He grew sadder and more silent.
But she could not answer him
otherwise than she had done.
Matches were being brought for-
ward for her also and with many
better young men than was Hirsh-
elle. And, according to the state-
ments of the match-maker, one of
them was an exceptional young
man. "Ile is beautiful and schol-
arly as the whole world. He talks
and writes several languages, even
French and German. In Jewish
matters he is, of course, well
versed. Ile has even written in a
journal once. His name was
printed in a newspaper. And
;when, please God, they would come
to terms about the dowry, the two
parties would be brought together
at the Kazatin railway station,
where all the trains meet."
It was said that the Kazatin
railway station was wonderfully
beautiful. It was lit up with elec-
tricity. And—if it is the will of
God, and the young man and the
girl are pleased with one another,
the bridegroom-elect and his par-
ents would come to the village, and
the betrothal would take place.
Feigalle imagined to herself
how the village would boil when
her betrothed would arrive in all
his glory. Everyone would run,
each individual trying to get past
his neighbor—each anxious to be
the first to see Feigalle's betrothed.
And they would clack their tongues
in great surprise.
"Well, a bridegroom-elect!•I A

low our Feigalle is getting! It's

him? Really, even the children in
their cradles know him. Well, and'
afterWards—what would be then?
After the betrothal, I mean? Noth-
ing! And after the wedding?
Again, nothing! The same Hir-
ahalle, the same village, the same
parents—everything the same as
when I was a girl. No change
whatever! Then what good is such
a betrothal to me? Why get mar-
ried? Surely, it is a real joke.
He is plainly a fool, this same Ilir-
shalle, for wanting me to become
engaged to him.

with which to decorate the houses
in honor of the festival.
Hirshalle is also busy about the
greenery. His home is already
provided for. But he has still to
decorate Leibus Pessyas' house.
There are no young men there
who would fetch the greenery.
And surely he is one of the tam-

This day he has almost forgot-

him." He has no time to think of
it. He remembers only that the
festival is coming and that, when
it comes, he would have more time
in which to talk with her, and to
look at her.
First thing in the morning, he
went into the Leibus Pessyas if
house with a basketful of fresh
greenery and flowers.
On seeing Ilirshalle with the
basket of greenery and flowers,
Feilgalle was pleasantly surprised
and greeted him with a loving
