A BAD YEAR ENDS; A BETTER ONE
OPENS

A year ago we Jews were "sitting on top of the
world." The Ford retraction had only recently been
published? The Jewish Agency for Palestine was an
assured reality. The condition of the Jews in Ru-
mania and Poland had shown a distinct improvement.
This feeling of confidence was reflected in the opti-
mistic expressions which The Jewish Chronicle drew
forth on the occasion of last Rosh Hashonah.
Things are very different now.
The last year has been bad for the Jews.
The Palestinian outrages have stunned us to a
point where we are but now realizing their full
sinister significance.
The death of Louis Marshall fills our hearts with
sorrow, even as it tries our minds to conceive a fit and
full successor.
The reign of good-feeling has been given a set-
back by the clumsy admissions of Dr. Anthony and
his "Committee on Good Will."
'
We are chagrined by the failure of our local drive
for Jewish enterprises.
We are profoundly concerned by the wave of law-
lessness that seems to have engulfed more than its
share of Jews.
Neverthless there are signs of an awakened Jew
ish interest and enthusiasm.
Under the leadership of Milford Stern our corn-
munity is responding in serious and substantial man-
ner to the call for Palestinian Relief.
The announcement of the Gaylord Foundation
has served to revive confidence in the early estab-
lishment of an adequate Jewish Center.
The Jewish Chronicle has become the articulate
mouth-piece of the Jewish Community in its rela-
tionships with the daily press.
Israel has ever had a way of working out of her
difficulties. In fact it has been said that we Jews
thrive on adversity. If this be true; then we should
certainly be due for an era of great prosperity.

WE ARE DENIED THE FEELING OF
CONTRITION; EVERY OTHER
SOLACE IS LEFT TO US.

Rabbi of Free Synagogue, New York; President of the Jewish Institute
of Religion.

The year is overshadowed, grievously overshad-
owed, by the events of its closing days. Rare is the
year in Jewish annals that includes no chronicle of
things painful and embittering. Once again we
looked for light and, behold, there is darkness.
I would not utter my New Year's message in the
form of threnody, but tears are in our hearts—tears
of deep, compassionate sorrow, tears of high, exult-
ant pride! Howsoever blame is, after a time, to be
apportioned, at the New Year's season it is for us
proudly to recall that once again our people has
proven equal to the martyr-task of its history. How-
ever terrible the guilt of others guilt of omission or
guilt of commission, our brothers have borne them-
selves blamelessly even to the end. So that we are
denied only the feeling of contrition, for every other
solace is left to us.
One holy place we craved for worship, and, even
there, in violation of every tradition of the centuries,
we were denied. And the tragedy of it, the guard-
ians of the city were asleep, awakening only to dis-
arm the thrice-wronged defenders of their people's
litfe! We thank God for the heroism of our youth ;
we praise God for the nobleness of those to whom
fell the immortal portion of Kiddush ha-Shem, in the
highest.
England will yet assure security, lest national
honor become a bauble of dross. The Open Door
and security were promised and the promise has been
doubly violated. And, indeed, reparation, however
large and ungrudging, will not be enough—not even
the exaction of decent neighborliness on the part of
those against whom the deep damnation of the tak-
ing off of our brothers pleads trumpet-tongued. Eng-
land must at least obey the law of its own covenant
of peace and honor with the Jewish people, includ-
ing sternest warning to those whom we have immeas-
urably benefited„ that plotting and uprising, if ever
again attempted, will be met with swift and awful
punishment.
But we must do more. We must now stand at the
side of our pioneers as never before. For they are the
advance guard of our loftiest hope. England and Eu-
rope and all the world must come to understand that
the Jewish re-builders of Palestine are not isolated
and unsupported adventurers, but the ambassadtis
of their people, humble in themselves and yet charged
with all our hopes and dreams and strength—inviol-
able hostages in the safekeeping of the great Con-
federate nation that must now strive to wipe out the
stain of blood, which weakness rather than guilt has
brought upon its escutcheon of honor.
But physical security is not enough, and to this
end physical reinforcement alone will not suffice.
We owe our heroic pioneers something more, and that
something more is a new devotion to their and our
cause. We, too, may be the guardians of our peo-
ple's spiritual fortune. We, too, are exposed to griev-
ous peril, the peril of disloyalty to the highest we
know of desertion of an infinitely precious heritage,
of foreswearing in truth and life the historic task of
Israel as witness to the divine outreaching and up-
reaching of man, the peril of bartering loftiest ideals
for meanest stndards. A finer, nobler World Israel
will be at one and the same time the surest security'.
and the richest fruition of our people's life on our
people's land.
So may the New Year be blessed to Israel and
mankind. Then shall our light break feth as the
morning and our healing spring forth speedily.

O

Through The Chronicle, I take the oppor-
tunity of extending greetings of the season
to all my dear friends and good neighbors
of the Jewish faith. May the New Year
bring the health, happiness, prosperity and
increased opportunities to be of service to
their country and co-religionists.
