$500 in each orphan, the Jews of
America .rho provided the funds,
have not Only shuts •red ;rid clothed
these children but have given them
training in various trades in which !
they are now engaged, SO that they
are 100 longer dependent upon the
Palestine Orphan Conimitt., of the
Joint Distribution Committer , for
their care.

This constructive achievement of
American Jewish philanthropy be-
came kiloton when David A. Brown,
national chairman of the ('oiled
Jewish Campaign, made public a
report of Miss Sophia itergtir, who
has Loan in charge of the Pales-
tine Orphan Committer. maintain-
ed by this fund. Miss Berger is
1111W 1111 a visit here and exports to
return to the Iloly Land shortly.
In her report she stated that out
Of .1,500 - orphans who had been
cared for during the last 10 years
in Palestine by the Orphan Com-
mittee of the Joint Distribution
Cr nunittee, only 102 children are
at present left to be provided for.
These constitute the number re-
maining of the -1,039 children
(lamed in charge of the committee
during its worst year, 1020,
The Palestine Orphan ( tommit-
tee of the .1. D. I'. was organized
10 years ago during, July 1919.
Al that time the committee had un-
der its care 3,315 orphans whose
parents had died during the \Vorld
War as it result of famine and var-
ious epidemics following the war.
In 1920 the number of orphans to
ho looked after increased to .1,03:1.
This figure, however, decreased
steadily year by year. In 1921 only 9.
:1,1111 wards were under the cam-
mittpe t s guidance; in 1922, 2055
and in 1928 the number decreased)
until only Irsi children remained in
its charge.
