Superintendent, United Hebrew School. of Detro't

Another event of outstanding importance was the
opening of a new Hebrew school in the Dexter section.
The first commencement exercises held in our
Hebrew High School, when 15 boys and girls corn-
pleted the three-year intensive high school course,
was a very significant occurrence. The successful
presentation of the operetta "Jephthah's Daughter"
in the Orchestra Hall is another achievement to be
proud of. This production served a twofold pur-
pose. It marked the tenth anniversary of the United
Hebrew Schools, and it exemplified the Ilebrew spirit
inculcated in the school.

PHILADELPHIA

— Substantiation of the charges
that the Grand Mufti massed the
Arab attackers on the fatal Fri-
day of Aug. 23, was brought by the
Rev. Donald G. Barnhouse, Chris-
tian clergyman, who just returned
from Palestine.
In an interview with the "Jew-
ish World" here, Rev. Barnhouse
gave the information that the
Grand Mufti housed 2,000 trained
Bedouins, who knew how to use
rifles, in the court of the Mosque
of Omar on the day of the out-
break in Jerusalem. Ile himself
saw them hidden and was warned
, not to enter for fear that he might
be mistaken f ,r a Jew, Rev. Barn-
house declared, expressing his con-
viction that the Mufti planned the
outbreaks. Rev. Barnhouse had
an interview with the Grand Mufti
and was photographed with him.

This is what is known as the "bein ha'zmanim"
period, the time when the slimmer semester ends and
the fall semester begins. These days are known in
our liturgic literature as the days of 'Tshuvah and
Cheshbon, the days when resumes and restrospects are
made and future plans formulated.
The year 5689 was an eventful one in the life of
the United Ilebrew Schools. It was fittingly ushered
in with an "Education Month," the purpose of which
was the focusing of the attention of the community
upon Jewish education.

Happy and Prosperous New Year to
all our friends and Policy holders.
May the New Year now beginning
bring realization of your fondest hopes
and ambitions.

ADULT EDUCATION PLANNED BY
UNITED HEBREW SCHOOLS
FOR COMING YEAR

MASON CONTRACTOR

The culmination of the activities was reached with
the completion of the seven-year elementary course
by a group of 40 boys and girls.
The liberal support given to the schools by the
Jewish Welfare Federation and the interest in and
sympathy for the work of the schools displayed by all
its members have created a relation of friendliness
and co-operation and have been instrumental in ce-
menting together many divergent factions.
But it was not all sunshine. There were also
clouds on our horizon. The sudden and untimely
death of the president and founder of the institution.
Mr. E. Robinowitz, instilled a gloom in the hearts of
all his friends, admirers and co-workers.
Now as to our future plans. The work of the
elementary and intermediate department are being
reinforced by the great influx of children and
by the addition of several new members to the per-
sonnel of teachers. The kindergarten department
is also making several additions. A music teacher
whose object it will be to introduce Jewish music in
all branches of the schools is another innovation of
far reaching significance.
But our outstanding feature to be introduced is one
to which much thought has been given and will, we
hope, be received with enthusiasm — namely, the
proposed plan of opening an Evening High School.
We plan to create an institution similar to and
modeled along the lines of the public evening high
school, to which only adolescents rd adults will be
admitted. The subjects offered will have the fol-
lowing classifications:
1. Hebrew language (for adolescents anti adults)
and cognate subjects (Bible, Jewish history, litera-
ture. etc.)
2. Yiddish language and cognate subjects (Yid-
dish literature, etc.)
3. Subjects taught in English, embracing many
aspects of Judaism.
The tosiors of this department will be conducted
on the basis cf one hour per week per subject for a
term of 20 weeks, comprising one unit of work.
Classes will be opened in every branch of the schools,
and in any other public building, easily accessible to
all sections of the Jewish population. A nominal
charge will be made in order to place the department
on it self-supporting basis.
It is hoped and expected that the response of
adults to this opportunity will be large and general.
Undoubtedly the openings of this Evening High
School will add much impetus to adult education in
Detroit.
