Go to Palestine

The approach of the Jewish N2w Year leaves coy
with very mingled feelings. The creation of the Jew-
ish Agency, as a symbol of a renewed attempt at
Jewish unity, seems an adequate compensation for
real and apparent defeat in other quarters. The
crisis in Palestine should clear the atmosphere and
prompt the British government to fulfill its obliga-
tions under the mandatory clauses of the Peace Treaty
and should also tone down the more chauvenistic ele-
ments in the Palestinian population so that an effec-
tive modus vivendi may be reached, and with the back-
ing of the Jewish Agency a Homeland for the Jew-
ish people he in reality established in Palestine.
Our local situation leaves much to be wished for.
The critical faculties of our wealthier Jews are still
more pronounced than their constructive activities.
With the improvement in real estate conditions a re-
turn of prosperity to our middle classes may make
possible the establishment of many institutions of
which we stand in dire need. The House of Shelter
needs refinancing and we certainly' need an Old Folks'
Home, although there is some difference of ideas as
to the extent of the need.
Most important in the immediate foreground is
the need for a Jewish Center, especially designed for
the needs of our young men and young women. The
Gaylord Foundation, it is to be hoped, will be a large
element in taking care of necessary expansions of
such an institution but it is expected that the com-
munity, itself, will provide adequate sums for a worthy
Center, so badly needed,

On the occasion of Rosh Ilashonah, the Jewish
New Year, I am pleased with the opportunity of again
sending greetings to the Jews of our Commonwealth.
The Detroit Jewish Chronicle has used its valuable
columns on each of these anniversaries to publish
greetings to the Jews, and to point out their contrib-
ution to American life. It has been my pleasure and
opportunity to observe the contribution that the Jews
make to American life in nearly every human activity.
Their accomplishments in the arts and sciences, and
particularly in medicine and surgery, have been out-
standing. Their contributions to American life are
fully recognized by all thinking and observing per-
sons. While these outstanding contributions I think
are paramount, yet their other activities must not be
overlooked; their contributions to industry and mer-
chandising are outstanding factors. Time and space
does not permit me to go into detail, but as a general
statement I think it cannot be successfully contro-
verted.
