ROSH HASHONAH
GREETINGS

Gratiot at Van Dyke Ave.

'

The Neilah Service on Yom Kippur has always
elevated the Jewish worshippers to a high degree of
religious estascy. Mainly through the words of the
prayer which'relates of the loss of Israel's material
possession, but finds solace in comfort in the posses-
sion of the Torah. This precious legacy has traveled
with Israel during his long and dark journey. This
possession enadraged Israel to endure all hardships
and misery. He has always been ready to give his
life for it, gladly and cheerfully.
The recent barbarous acts committed by savages
on the guardians of the Torah, the massacres in He-
bron and •Safed testified the truth of these assertions,
that to some of our people, the Torah is still dearer
than their very lives, but alas this truth does not ap-
ply to most of our American Jews.
The sacrifices the Jews in America have brought
on the altar of the Torah are few in number. I draw
this conclusion from the conditions of the Jewish
community of Detroit. Through the great efforts
of a small group of Jews, a system of Hebrew educa-
tion has been established in Detroit. The United
Hebrew schools has furnished the Jewish Community
with a splendid staff of a highly qualified teachers,
who had the ability to transmit their knowledge of
Jewish religion and culture to the Jewish youth of
Detroit.
The buildings, which house the pupils are of a
very modern construction and the methods of teach-
ing are of the latest development and pedigody. But
how many Jewish parents are willing to make small
sacrifices for the Torah to send their children to these
schools? How many parents wish to bring up their
children that they should be ready to mai& any sac-
rifices for the sake of the Torah? Their number is
surely not great. If the Jewish parents would only
understand that if they really loved their children
it is for this parernal love that they should try with
all their might to favor their children by giving them
a Ilebrew education. A Jew without Jewish know-
edge is inconsiderable. It is high time that the Jews
of Detroit should begin to realize this truth. They
should realize that it is about time they should live
up at least to one precept of the Torah, namely, "Thou
shalt teach them diligently" and the subject of teach-
ing diligently is the Torah, which is the main subject
of the United Hebrew Schools.
The medium of transmitting the Torah to the pu-
pils is Hebrew. In addition to this subject the pu-
pils acquire the knowledge of the history of their
people. They learn to conduct religious service by
themselves. Through the knowledge of the Torah
they become better men and women. The large num-
ber of the alumni of the United Hebrew Schools will
bear witness to this assertion.
Let the year 5690 be a year that will enrich the
Jewish children gt Detroit with the knowledge of
their Torah. Let this year bring comfort to the Jew-
ish commtfltily in particular and all Israel in general.

PHILIP HALSMANN
GETS NEW TRIAL Rosh Hashonah Greetings

VIENNA—(J. T. A.)—Before
a jury court, the now trial of Philip
Halsmann, Jewish student who was
sentenced to 10 years imprison-
ment on the charge of patricide
as the result of the mysterious
death of his father, while the two
were on a walking trip in the Tyrol
Mountains in the summer of 192d,
was opened at Innsbruck.
The new trial was granted after
the case attracted much attention
in the Austrian press where it was
charged that Halsmann was the
vicitim of prejudice and that the
evidence upon which he was con-
victed was insufficient since, if it
were, he would have been sen-
I tenced to death. Charges of anti-
Semitic
on the jury were
I
made.
I The court permitted the prison-
er to pay a visit to his father's
I grave to recite the Kaddish on the
I first anniversary of his death. He
was accompanied by a rabbi and
I a special guard. His mother, sis-
ter and other relatives were pres- I
ent, all protesting his innocence. 1
I I The counsel for defense called
forth a great sensation in court,
I when he declared that within the
I next few days he will submit evi-
j dence showing the name of the real
murderer of the elder Halsmann.
Halsmann was a wealthy dentist
of Riga, Latvia and was an owner
iof real estate in Palestine and
Switzerland.

UNCONSCIOUS HUMOR

I Sam Stern, since he had become
13resident of a big corporation,
liked to assert his newly-won au-
lthority over his employes, so one
day he decided to "bawl out" Jake
'Levine, one of the young clerks.
To Sam's dismay, however, Jake
came right back at him and began
telling himjust how the corpora.
tion should be managed.
"Wait!" cried Sam, red with an-
ger, "are you president of this cor-
corpation, young man?"
"No, air; of course not," Jake
answered.
"Well, then," answered Sam,
somewhat mollified, "don't talk
I like a tool."—El'oal B'rith Hag.-
nine.
