'nine cAuFtal. He has stayed on the job in your behalf. Once more we assemble in the synagogues for prayer and communion with the Almighty. We fol- low the ceremony of prayer as prescribed in three general sections which were called by our sages, "Malchioth"—sovereigns, "Sichronoth"I--reminders, "Shofroth"—instrumental voices. The words "Sichronoth," "Shofroth," and "Mal- choith" this year tvill bring a new significance to our minds in a different way. "Shofroth"—we must use the "instrumental voices" in the form of mass meet- ings, resolutions and protests. "Sichronoth," for re- minding—"Malchioth," the sovereigns of the earth and the rulers of the nations—that they must keep their promises to the Jewish people. According to our sages, the cry of the Shofar is "Wake tip, you sleepy ones, from your sleep." But how terrible it is for those of us who awake from our sleep to find many of our hopes of wonderful individ- ual and national life were only sweet dreams. It re- minds me of a story told by one of our sages. There was once a merchant who was very ambitious to be- come exceedingly wealthy. To this end he tried many ways with all his mind and soul, but all to no avail. His best efforts were not crowned with success. Once he journeyed to a far away city to attend a fair where he hoped by performing his business trans- actions, to attain the desired wealth, but to his great sorrow, he was not successful. After his day's work, he went to his lodging place where, pressed clown by his burden of sorrow, he fell into a deep sleep and had a nice dream. He dreamt that he passed through the basement of the house and he noticed something brilliant glittering on the ground. He investigated and observed that there was a precious stone. Ile started to dig, and to his surprise, he discovered an enormous treasure of diamonds and jewels deep in the earth. At first he thought of filling bags with the treasure and bringing it home. But, fearful lest the owner and other people hinder him, he decided to keep the whole matter secret and cover the treasure with earth until he returned home where he would accumlate enough money to buy the whole property and enjoy the fortune with his wife and children. In the morning, he arose and went to his business forgetting his dream entirely. Long after he had re- turned home, the thought of the treasure sprang to his mind, but he forgot one detail. He forgot that the whole matter was a dream. He called to his wife and children with great joy, he disclosed to them the secret of the treasure. He sold all his possessions regardless of price and he set out with his wife and children for the town of the fortune with the expecta- tion of immediate riches. After buying the house at an enormous price, he started to dig for the for- tune but he found nothing. Then it come to his mind that the whole treasure was a dream. Is not this the same story with many of our hopes and struggles during the year, even during our life- time? Does it not seem in the light of recent events to be the same story of our struggles based upon sov- ereign promises in our homeland? Although, it ap- pears to us as a dream, it is expressed by the psalmist, "When the Lord bringeth back again the captivity of Zion, we shall be like dreamers." (Psalm 123.)
