savages while the Jews stood helpless in the

Because the conscience of British officials

Yet it is not too late for England to wipe

It is not too late for the conscience of
mankind to dictate to the beasts in the
Land of Peace that the clays of such cold-
blooded barbarities are over!
It is not yet too late for the followers of
Jesus of Nazareth to proclaim that enough
blood has been shed in the land of religion
and faith; that the world will not permit

And the Jew's answer to the barbarities
suffered the past fortnight must be the de-

That the ground drenched with Jewish
blood will not be yielded, else it will be an
admission that justice is no more and that
historic righteousness has died.
Israel's answer to these barbarities is a
renewal of hope that Zion shall be re-

But in all seriousness, we wonder what
Japanese reaction will be to Dr. Oyado's
theories, Will the Mikado follow the re-
ported example of the Armenians and send
a delegation of Japanese to some Jewish
community to study Jewish customs and
traditions, with a view of embracing Juda-
ism?

Stifling Reason.
Because, to quote Burke, "between craft
and credulity the voice of reason is stifled,"
mankind continues to suffer from the su-
perstitions of the Middle Ages.
Unbelievable as it may sound, in the city
of London, capitol of the great British Em-
pire, Jews are compelled to pay taxes to
vicarages, for altar renovations and church
decorations, because a seventeenth cen-
tury law provided such punishment for
"Jews and Turks." In Austria, similar
laws compel Jews to contribute to the up-
keep of Christian churches. Even in our
own enlightened and free United States,
there are communities which, from time to
tome, invoke laws which prove how deep-
rooted credulity and superstition are in
men's hearts and minds. In the free state
of Wisconsin, for instance, the Senate re-
fused, recently. to repeal the blue laws of
75 years' standing, thereby subscribing to
statutes of the days when witches were
burnt at the stake and the judges believed
they were acting in the name of God and
justice.
The twentieth century has made rapid
strides scientifically, mechanically, indus-
trially. But the hearts of men seem to con-
tinue to be ruled by dark and superstitious
errors. Else, would enlightened human be-
ings have upheld the backward and op-
pressive statutes that smell of ancient op-
pressive spirits?

dicted Beginning of Redemp-
tion Period to Be in 1913
and End in 1929.

Two !supposed references to the
coming of the Messiah, contained
in the Book of Daniel, have for
many centuries caused Jewish
scholars to resort to higher math-
ematics in an effort to figure out
the end of the Exile and the begin-
ning of the Redemption. Not only
mystics, but the greatest schol-
••s of nu:divotl times, including
Itin Ezra and Maimonides, joined
in the great sport of trying to fig-
ure out the year for which the
Prophet Daniel predicted the end
of the Jewish Dispersion.
The two references in Daniel
are vii. 25 and xii,12. The first
hides the year of Redemption un-
der the folowing figures:

Of course, the calculators have
miscalculate:I. The figures of most
of the Talmudic and rabbinic
mathematician have already proved
wrong. In many instances their
predictions were accompanied by
tragic results for their followers
who believed implicitly in the truth
of the calculations and for whom .
their failure to materialize
brought terrible disappointments,
suicides and other tragedies. In
the days of the false Messiah Sat).
batai Zevi, for instance, there were
men who attempted to prove by
magic of their calculations, on the
basis of Daniel's prophecies, that
Sabliatai Zevi was the Messiah.
Such ea lcula ti o ns naturally
strengthened belief and faith in
Jewish hearts and increased the
tragedies that followed Sabbatai
Zevi's conversion to Islam.
But people have not ceased to be-
ieve in the hidden figures in Dan-
iel's prophecies, and many of the
faithful today point to the union
of all Jew's for the cause of Pal-
estine's reconstruction as the be-
ginning of the end of the Messian-
ic period as the realization of the
calculations of the noted Rabbi
Meir Loeb Jehiel Michael 11809-
1879) better known as Malbim, a
name derived from the initials of
Lis name and which has, by fre-
quent usage, become his family
name.
The Malbim, as late as 1861, cal-
culated that the Redemption period
would begin in 1913. His follow-
ers now declare that he has fig-
ured correctly because he predict-
ed that the beginning of the end
of Exile would be in the period
just before the World War, which
ushered in the Balfour Declara-
tion, issued on November 2, 1927.
But the 'Malbim (lid not say that the
end would come with the beginning.
Ile predicted that the period of the
Redemption would extend to the
year Tarpat (5689). The consum-
mation of the Jewish Agency for
l'alestine is pointed to by the
faithful as marking the end of the
present Messianic period. Unity in
Israel is nothing short of being
Messianic, these declare, not only
ignoring the sad events at the
Wailing Wall, but declaring that
the redemption is being speeded
by last week's outrages,
Rabbi Meir Loeb Malbim had a
very interesting career. This no-
ted rabbi, preacher and Ilebraist
was born at Volochisk, Volhynia,
in 1809, and died in Kiev Septem-
ber Di, 1879. Ile was educated in
the Talmud and Hebrew by his
father and his step-father, Rabbi
Loeb of Volochisk, and from his
childhood showed unusual brillian-
cy. His later works indicated that
he had a considerable knowledge
of secular sciences. Ile was the
author of a collection of sermons;
a dramatic phillipic in verse
against hypocrisy, published in
Paris in 1867; commentaries on
the Shulchan Aruch, the Penta-
teuch and Sifra, the Prophets and
Hagiographa. His "Mikra'e Ko-
desh," the commentary on the
Prophets and Hagiographa (that
part of the Holy Scriptures known
as Ketubim), he endeavored to ex-
plain the different meanings of
synonims, and the calculation of
Daniel's prophecies forms a part
of this volume.
The Jewish Encyclopedia gives
the following facts about the ca-
reer of the Malbim:

THE writer of the following takes too much for
granted. Ile, like the editor of the Yiddish daily
The Day, takes refuge in generalities in discussing
sly attitude whether or not there is a Jewish cul-
ture that could properly be represented in a room
set aside for than purpose in the University of Pitts-
burgs. I said there isn't and no one has been able
to convince ale by proof that I am wrong. It is not
sufficient to say that I am not learned in traditional
Judaism.
What does that have to (ha with it?
Sometimes some of my friends are so steeped in
Jewish lore that they forget we are living in the
twentieth century and they are always turning to
the past for their inspiration, That's one of the
faults of too many Jews, they hitch their star to a
tombstone. Whitt I am objecting to is to attempt
(under cover) to create in this country a new Jew-
ish ghetto, glorified of course. but a ghetto just the
same. There is ft distinct difference in mental atti-
tude toward what Jewish life should be in this coun-
try, het•een the East European Jew, who roughly
represents the Orthodox element, and the Reform
group. There must he a (lay of reckoning and when
that day conies, I fear very much that there will
be an upheaval in American Jewry, the effect of
which will be felt all around the world.

THE following is the letter I refer to. Space pre-
vents publishing it in full, but in condensing it
I have retained the thought:
My Dear Mr. Joseph:
I not pleased to note that you find some con-
solation in the caustic yet altogether truthful
letter of the editor of the Yiddish daily The
Day (perhaps it is because you had your pic-
ture taken), while I admire your writing and
give you credit for the fine mind you have
developed.
In some of your thoughts on local anti-
Semitic, national and even international poli-
tics you display fair judgment.
But I must agree with The Day, when it
touches matters Jewish; I mean that which re-
quires real Jewish, historical. traditional Jew-
ish Been thinking. Jewish heartfelt sympathy,
especially where Orthodox Jews are concerned,
I think you, like the Irishman in the fight, are
taking up too much territory.
How can you or any other American-born
writer feel for the poor down-trodden Jew of
Europe? How it is possible for you to have the
sympathy which must come from the wounded
and bleeding heart of a fellow Jew? It is
only he who was born and raised with them as
himself felt the pain- and sorrow. How can
two hearts heat as one when the two never had
anything in common?
You will say, "Don't I read of all that is
going on in the world and can I not form an
opinion from what I read?" Yes, so you can,
but that opinion never will nor never can be
a true first-handed opinion.

or later official Jewry will have to meet
the issue presented in this interesting letter
from a reader in Pittsburgh. Never have we ever
known such a maze of seeming contradictions and
anomalies concerning any people as those with
which the Jew is involved. Since we are not sure
about ourselves how can we expect to explain our-
selves intelligently to the world? My reader credits
me with greater wisdom than I possess. I have
invited time and again the outstanding minds in
Jewry to define a Jew, but to date I have received
no light on the subject. Perhaps I shall set aside
one week for a symposium on the subject inviting a
number of leaders in American Jewish life to give
in brief form their opinion. In the meantime, the
following letter will be of interest:
Your "kind but unknown friend" ventures
to seek your guidance on a matter that has
been "cussed" rind discussed in the columns of
every Jewish paper and magazine ever since
printing has been invented. It is this: Are we
a race, a nation, a faith, or all—or none of
these? You have, no doubt. been confronted
with this question so often that when you see
it now you will probably wish me in Jericho.
But I have never been able to find out what
stand official-Jewry (if there be such a Jewry)
takes on that question, although I reckon to
keep in touch with every phase of Jewish
thought.
I thought of it again today after reading a
letter that a Jew from Arizona sent to The
Day in answer to an editorial that paper had
under the caption: "Why Jews Do Not As-
similate."
The Day's reply to its honest inquiring cor-
respondent is only no much verbosity with a lit-
tle seasoning of sophistry; leaving him where
he was before: with an inquiry on his lips but
no one to answer to it. Here is his question:
How about a Jew who is irreligious and to
whom the religious tie is of no consequence?
You will probably soy, then, that nationalism
might serve as a tie? But the elements that
bind the Jews together are not of a national
character at all. Jews do not have the self-
same identical national interests in the lands
of their diaspora. They only possess certain
nhychological "streaks" which act as a tie
between them in their roaming, wandering lives
—streaks that are far from our own liking.
life K'hat, then, can give the Jew a purpose in

receives my full sympathy. But look at the
dark clouds that hang over Zionism! Look at
the British policies in Palestine, at the Wail-
ing Wall incident and, apart from that, what
have we gained by the Balfour Declaration?
Equal rights with the Arabs? I look upon the
Arab at his best as an undesirable neighbor.
We
are investing in Palestine our blood
and sweat, but Providence knows whether we
can trust our future to it; whether history will
not repeat itself.
And, now to summarize it all: Having no
religious tie and no national tie—for national
elements on foreign soil in impossible—and
Zionism being beclouded, as it is, what is there,
pray, in Jewry for a Jew like myself? And
there are many such Jews!
Unless we are to live indifferently a life sep-
arated from both the Gentiles and the Jews,
for our Jewish traits are obnoxious to the
Gentiles and often even to ourselves. What is
your advice?
You, my dear Mr. Joseph, will probably say
that the correspondent has a "psychological
streak" of pessimism. Perhaps so. But the
same problem is continually raised by people
who otherwise show no sign of pessimism.
Are we then a race, a nation or a faith?
If a faith, how about the irreligious Jew—how
about the Jewish atheist?
If. on the other hand, faith is not the decid-
ing factor in Jewishness, but rather parentage
and blood, then we are a race and no faith,
Jewish, Christian, Moslem, or any other has
any bearing on the name "Jew." Since the
scions of that race all over the world feel
themselves to Ise "Jews" and have "national
aspirations and can point to a national past,
history, tradition, etc., they are a nation. I
would then include every Jew, religious or irre-
ligious, of the Jewish, Christian or Moslem
• faith in the ranks of the Jews. If a Je•—a
man born of Jewish parentage—feels himself
Jewish his religion, or irreligion, must not be
taken into consideration.

That is only my humble opinion. I wish I
had the adyantage of your wisdom on this
matter.

in Washington through many a
sleepy and hot summer had sud-
denly to get on their toes last week
with the outburst of the Palestine
excitement. The "boss" chased
them around to the State Depart-
ment for the latest bulletins,
thence to the British embassy,
thence to the White House for an
additional word, back again to the
State Department for an unex-
pected interview which Secretary

Stimson was prepared to give the
press. Thus it kept up for quite a
few days. And when the delega-
tions front New York started com-
ing these correspondents kept taxis
busy chasing after each short visit
to get "the latest and complete"
news for their sheets.
Jews and Palestine became
more familiar to officials and wri-
ters during those few days than
they ever have been. Suddenly—
in the midst of writing a story—
one scribe found he did not under-
stand the geography of Palestine
to write an intelligent account of
what was happening and tabulate
the casualty lists properly. He
was wise enough to call up one of
his Jewish friends who did under-
stand such matters, and this
helped hint out. Another man
doubted whether his spelling of
names and places was correct and
checked up those facts with his
Jewish friend, who was also a
writer.
A very well known Washington
representative of a leading news-
paper admitted that he had learned
more about his own race and its
Zionist hopes and problems than in
many years of casual observation.
Two Jewish newspaper men have
admitted that they never knew
there were over 150,000 Jews in
the Holy Land at this time!
It takes a sad striking event to
bring many facts home. This
was a very costly means of propa-
ganda, we thought.

WASHINGTON and Jerusalem
were never linked so closely
by cable as during this period of
distress. The British ambassador
was being besieged every moment
for news about particular persons,
and simultaneously the State De-
partment was in constant com-
munication with Paul Knabenshue,
the consul of the United States in
Jerusalem.
Most American Jews had never
heard the name Knabenshue be-
fore, but this circumstance put his
name onto the headline and his

picture on the front pages of a
newspapers. We told you quite a
bit about the gentleman severa
months ago when he was in thi
country on a visit. Ile has shown
himself to be very friendly to the
Zionist cause by understanding it.
He has been of practical assistance
in matters of commercial reports,
passports and other questions that
needed friendly touches. Ile has
given the State Department and
the Department of Commerce very
favorable reports from time to
time.
Knabenshue's name will tt,,
down in Jewish history because of
the constructive nature of his
work at this critical moment in
l'alestine. Secretary Stimson is
relying on him entirely and find-
ing satisfaction, su he says.

Washington with the one in New
York who had been seen only a
day earlier. Sir Esme Howard
greeted the delegation with more

personal concern in all that was

his New York consul—say that he
thought the delegation was all
wrong but he would put it before
his government.
Sir Esme indicated that he could
easily understand the feelings of
Zionists here and would do all in
his power to hasten relief to that

EINSTEIN'S FORMULA FOR
SUCCESS IN LIFE
S. J. Woolf, in special corre-
spondence from Berlin to the New
York Times on "Einstein's Own
Corner of Space," describes the
great mathematician's and phi-
losopher's home life. Ile tells
of his visit to this great Jew and
how, when it was time for him to
go and as Dr. Einstein saw hint to
the door, he asked him what he
considered the best formula for
success in life. Einstein smiled,
"that same awkward, bashful smile
and thought for a minute."
"If A is success in life," he
replied, "I should say the formula
is:

X being work and Y being play."
"And what is Z," asked Mr.
Woolf.
"That," Einstein answered, "is
keeping your mouth shut."

EVERYTHING IS RELATIVE
Dr. Albert Einstein had occa-
sion to display his wit at a dinner
given by an aristocratic French
lady at which he and a number of
other celebrities were guests. The
hostess asked Dr. Einstein to ex-
plain his theory so she could un-
derstand it.
"Well," replied Einstein, "it's
all very simple. If my theory
proves to be correct, you, as a
French lady, will assert that I ant
a Frenchman; if it is proved incor-
rect, you will say I am a Jew. Now.
if the theory proves correct, the
Germans will maintain I am a
German; and if incorrect, that I
am a Jew. You see, everything is
relative and conditional."

WeObserve That

The Detroit Free Press last Saturday sang to "The
Glory That Was Arabia." The only praise it failed to shout
was "Hurrah for the Arab bandits in Palestine."

Grandma Free Press grew eloquent about the culture that woo
Arabia's. It didn't tell Us, however, that savage Arabs in Palestine
last week destroyed two of the most valuable libraries in the world
containing manuscripts dealing with Oriental history.

But the Jewish Communists in New York were "braver"
than the non-Jewish anti-Semites. They actually protested
on the occasion of the Palestine outrages—not against the
bandits in Arab garb but against the Jewish self-defense
corps.

The Jewish Communists made a collection for funds to battle against
British imperialists and their Jewish allies. Do they intend to purchas
weapons with these funds to be used in slaughtering the "guilty Jews?

Evidently it takes Jewish blood to make Jewish Com-
munists more crimson. They ought to he put to the test
whether they would have the guts to defend themselves in
time of crisis.
