We know in advance that Justice Butzel's
tion with tha State iiprerre (:o.:r. will lend dignity and
honor to the Jewish r.arne. and we rejoice therefore at
the Governor's choice. The new Justice, his family
and associates have our heartiest greetingson this hap-
py occasion.

America's First Bull Fighter-a Jew.

It used to to, raid-and some still dart Ed y it-that
s Jew will only fight with his Oa:gut. This has been
refuted in tvtry gtritration, and in the prttitnt such a
statement would he branded as stupid. The position
that Jews hold in the boxing and general sports world
speaks for itself. Bet.des. Jtws have in all ages con-
tributtd their share of fight/frt. We have. for instance,
the east of Moses de Igicena, who was arrested in Ap-
ril 1660 for f.ght;ng in the streets of Amsterdamwith
Jan Jansen of Rotterdam. De Lucena. records say.
claimed when fined in court that he administt.rtd a
besting to the Dutchman in self-defense.

Now, more than two and a half centuries later,
the distinction of being America's first and only bull
fighter gitl. 71) a Jew. Sidney Franklin, a graduate of
Columbia Chivtnity, heard a challenge that Arntri-
taus may bt good athletes, but that only Latins have
• the ability to vanquish Eavav bulls. He left the art
studio he conducted with a partner and went to Ilex-
ico City to watch the bull fights. After a short period
he declared bull fighting to be "easy," and under the
tutelage of Roclolfo Goana, said to be Mexico's great-
est bull fighter, was trained for the arena and is today,
. after NIX and a half years, a noted matador,-the first
; American bull fighter, and a Jew.

Add another point to the credit of Jewish venality,
butasy it with this reiteration:

Bull fighting, any kind of fighting, in not for the
Jew, even though he may, in self-defense, be compelled
to use his fists. For, Israel's mission is peace.

The Jewish W ar Veterans Association earns the
right to existence1 y virtue of the fact that it cares for
the needs of the Js with veteran. Its functioning is jut--
tified by the mere act that it str•es always to remind
the non-Jew that Itwt are patriots and always give
more than their th are of manpower for the defense of
their country. Its e xitttnce serves as a warning against
those who would malign the Jewish name and who
would place emph aids on the Jewish lawbreaker. al.
though the latter an intignificant minority, out of pro-
portion Ti., the Jessi, th population,
Julius S. Berg, commander-in-chief of the Jewish
War Veterans, whe , has nerved several terms as mem-
bar of the New Yo rk State Assembly, is in Detroit to
form a local branch of the association. There is no rea-
son why Jewish wa r veterans should not join the ranks
of this organization 1• The argument that it forms an-
other Jewish clan within a class is groundless. unless
Jews themselves wi di to strengthen that argument.
