- The
Joint Foreign Committee, the
body representing the Anglo-Jew-
ish Association and the Board of
Jewish Deputies, fur the protec-
tion of Jewish rights, will spare
no effort to persuade the govern-
ment a Norway be reconsider the
recent decision of Parliament to
enact a prohibition o n schechita,
declared Lucien Wulf, secretary,
in the committee's report sub-
mitted Sunday to the monthly
meeting of the Board of Jewish
Deputies.
A prohibition of schechita has
already been adopted in Sweden,
and there is real danger that the
two Scandinavian kingdoms may
be followed by Denmark. The
Joint Foreign Committee was
taken by surprise since the pro-
moters of the scherhita prohibi-
tion in Norway made secret prepa-
rations for the passage of the bill
to prevent Jewish bodies from
counteracting their propaganda
which was defeated two years ago.
The Joint Foreign Committee
has decided that it cannot make
representations to the government
of Rumania in connection with the
present controversy between the
government a nil Jewish leaders
concerning the Jewish communi-
ties law. Mr. Wolf explained that
there was not question of intoler-
able persecution or of an infrac-
tion of treaty rights, but an in-
ternal difference between various
sections of the Jewish community.

Dr. Wise's Address.
Sir Ilerbert touched upon the
seventh dominion idea, calling
upon the adherents of this plan tit
work hand in hand with those who
are forming the Jewish Agency.
Without arguing the merit or de-
merit of the seventh dominion
idea, which for British, Jewish and
international reasons has its op-
ponents, those who it agree to this
idea can still agree with the rest
of us in creating a strong Jewish
Agency, he said. Ile described Dr.
Weizmann's invitation to all par-
ties in Jewish life to join the •ew-

far-sighted self-sacrifice, since it
means the volunteer renunciation
of one-half of the seats on the
Agency to representatives of a Ma-
jority which has done little fur the
Palestine cause.
Theodor Herz! was hailed by Dr.
Stephen S. Wise as a "modern

upon their teturn last week from
a nine months' tour Of European
countries and Palestine, more than
half of the time having been spent
in the Jewish Homeland, were en•
thusiastic over the successes of the
Jewish pioneers and of the prog-

Mr. Marwil compared his ex-
riences live years ago, on his
first visit to Palestine, with those
of the present trip, and said that
the change for the better is great.
Industries have been built and the
orange industry has advanced, Mr.
Marcell said, and the improvements
in Jewish settlements are a source
of pride to all Jews.
Marred by Mrs. Marwil's illness
in Tel Aviv, the Marwils state,
however, that the joy of their stay
in the Holy Land was unsurpassed,
and Mrs. Marwil hopes for a return
visit to the Jewish Homeland to
make up for "lost time" during
her illliess. Miss Marwil describes

special essay which will be pub-

Rabbi Gives Brilliant Satire on Present-Day Conditions;
Presumptuous Lay Authority, Babbitry in Pulpit,
Excessive Building Ambition Among Evils.
By DR. ISRAEL GOLDSTEIN
(What is wrong with the American synagogue? Nothing,
say some. Others insist that there is something the matter with
that Jewish institution which has accompanied the people from
an early period, witnessed the restlessness among the lay mem-
bership and the dissatisfaction of the rabbis. A searching pres-
entation of the problem and its causes was made by Dr. Israel
Goldstein, rabbi of Congregation B'nai Jushurun, New York,
at the annual convention of the Rabbinical Assembly held last
weal: in Long Branch, New Jersey. It is not at all necessary
to agree fully with the views and the diagnosis formulated by
Dr. Goldstein, to enjoy his brilliant satire on present-day con.
ditions. What he describes mirrors conditions not only in
Conservative congregations, which are served by the members
of the Rabbinical Assembly, but also those obtained in the syna-
gogues and temples of the older wings of American Jewry.- -
