Fiftieth Birthday of Dr. Einstein
Honored By Enthusiastic Audience

Rabbi Hershman Pays Tribute to Great Scientist and Zion-

The auditorium of Northern

Sunday evening when Detroit
Zionists and their friends and
families turned outt 0 honor the
fiftieth birthday of Dr. Albert
Einstein, the greatest living physi-
cist and mathematician, and out-
standing Zionist figure.

Prof. George Y. Rainich of the
department of mathematics of the
University of Michigan; Fritz

tative; Rabbis A. M. Hershman

chairman of the Detroit Jewish
National Fund, under whose aus-
pices the meeting was arranged,
presided.

Lauds Einstein's Jewishness. •

The keynote of the meeting was
struck by Rabbi Ilershman, who
declares! that "if Einstein had
been the scientist only, it would
not he within the province of a
Jewish organization to celebrate
his fiftieth birthday."

us nothing in return," he declared.
"Einstein is a notable exception
to this theory. Ile has placed his
efforts, his genius, his time to the
service of his people. This scien-
tist has gone on tours in the inter-
ests of the Jewish Homeland. Ile
has taken two trips to this coun-
try, and on every occasion spoke
of the cause most important to
him, the cause of Palestine.
"Best Way to Honor Him."
"The best may of appreciating
and honoring Einstein is by dedi-
cating ourselves to what is dear-
est to him, to the cause of the re-
building of Palestine, which, we
expect. will produce great men
who will be great men because
they will be great Jews."
In referring to Dr. Einstein as
"a notable exception" to the rule
of great men who took everything
from their people and gave noth-
ing in return, Rabbi Hershman
declared that the human problem
is the most serious Jewish prob-
lem, and that Zionism is an answer
to this problem.
The meeting opened with re-
marks by the chairman, Mr. Kure
land, who outlined the purpose of
the meeting as aimed to honor the
great friend of Palestine, and es-
pecially the Jewish National Fund
—Albert Einstein. His remarks
were followed by a greeting in He-
brew by Chemdah Markson, in be-
. half of the United Hebrew Schools.
Other Greetings, Music.
Dr. Aronstam extended a greet-
ing in the name of the Maimonides

"Einstein in not only a scientist
but alas, a Jew," Rabbi Hershman
said. "He is a Jew not by acci-
dent of birth, but by worth, a true
and loyal Jew devoted to his peo-
ple."
Declaring that "to understand a
man you must know hntecedenta,"
Rabbi Hershman pointed out that
Bergson, Karl Marx, Lasaalle and
other great world figures owed
their greatness to their Jewish an-
cestry. "The tragedy is that they
