Anonymous Donor Pledges
I
$200,000 for First Col-
lege of Kind.
NEW YORK. — With the an-
nouncement that a "Manhattan
business man" had promised to tin-
nate 8200,000 toward a university,
on Long Island, plans were set in
motion May 15 for the establish-
ment there of the first Jewish uni-
versity in the United States. It
was agreed, however, by the or-.
ganization committee, which met !
nt the Hotel Astor, that, although; I
the institution would be sponsored!
and perhaps controlled by Jews, it
!would be non-sectarian with re-
spect to its faculty and student •
body.
Former Assistant United States
Attorney Murry Boxer of Brook-!
lyn, who announced the promised
donation, said the offer was made
by a man who did not wish his
identity to become known to the
public at this time. He would not
'say whether the "Manhattan busi-
ness man" was a Jew, but declared
•the decision to establish a Jewish
university would meet with his ap-
proval.
Former United States Attorney
William A. De Groat of Brook-
lyn, the only one at the meeting
who was not a Jew, spoke in favor
of the movement, saying that
members of other faiths should
recognize the contributions of
Jews to the human race today, and
that the sponsorship by Jews of a
non-sectarian university might
"help us to get away from this
idea of the Methodist college, the
Catholic college and others."
Mr. Boxer, who was made per-
manent chairman of the organiza-
tion committee, explained that t he
man who had promised the $200,-
000 made the gift conditional upon
the raising by subscription of
$300,000 more in order to comply
with the New York State law,
which makes it necessary that
$500,000 be raised before a char-
ter is issued for a university. It is
believed that the anonymous donor
•is a non-Jew.
Mr. Boxer named, as the com-
mittee to prepare the charter and
also to draw up resolutions with
respect to the purposes of the pro-
! posed university, Abraham Gold-
berg, Harvey Lee, Julius Gottlieb
and William T. Nemerov. This
Icommittee is to report to a later
meeting of the organization com-
mittee.
Isador A. Press said there was
!oliscrimination against the Jew in
American universities and a tend-
, envy to limit Jews to a quota. He
declared the committee wanted a
place where the Jews could "enter
land feel at home."
Others who attended the meet-
ing of the organization committee,
• practically all members of which
are from Brooklyn, included N.
Feinthal, Zwie Cohen, Simcha
Isaacman, S. Tristman and B. Leon:
Hurwitz. The committee is made
up of teachers. former teachers,
'attorneys and business men. The
date for the next meeting of the
organization committee was not!
nounced.

Do you know, for instance, that your Gas Company
can shove you how to build a home to save fuel and
heat it at a reasonable cost? Do you I; now' that ser•
vice charges on a gas fired furnace over long periods
of years are practically nothing; that your Gas Com•
pany in selling you this heating is also guaranteeing
you real service? Did you ever think of the fact that
you don't have to pay for gas fuel until you've used
it—and if you aren't heating your home, you don't
have your money tied up in a fuel that has to be
stored? Have you ever known that gas is the one form
of household heating on which you can really know
the approximate price for every year, before you have
ever expended a penny on it
There's no guesswork on gas. It is cleaner, more eco.
