By MILFORD STERN
If we wish to be assured that our children will become a genera-,
lion of intelligent, loyal and active Jews, we must see clearly our
duty to provide them with religious training.
What we have done in America until lately by way of Jewish
education, has fallen far short of meeting our full responsibility. Our
efforts have been picayune. We have just about succeeded in estrang-
ing our youth from Jewish life and ideals.
Perhaps it was the process of self-Americanization that made us
shun Jewish education. Be that as it may, the time has come at last
when we Jews are beginning to realize that we cannot survive as a
people without adequate training in the field of religion.
There is in us a will to live and a determination to preserve our
Judaism. Our leaders have become aroused to the fact that to con-
tinue a course of neglect would ultimately and inevitably bring dis-
aster. We have become conscious of sacrificing values of the utmost
significance, and conscience-stricken lest we sell our birthright.
Consequently it remarkable change in the attitude of the American
Jew towards Jewish education has come about, and it is a grateful
and hartening change. The new enthusiasm has led to a renascence;

Some of our people have thought that the public schools alone
would suffice for character building. The spiritual bankruptcy of our
school system is a disheartening, fact. The common schools can give
our children only a minimum of character education. That is why
the need is so insistent fur separate religious schools, with specially
