laden with the spoils of their vic-
tory. Rumors are spread that the
elders of Gilead, who suffer much
at the hands of the Ammonites are
sending envoys to Jephthah to as-
sume leadership. A thrill goes
through the camp. Jephthah, their
chieftain, to become judge in
Israel! Ills daughter, Sheilah, is
especially interested in these tales
about the envoys. There is one
man, though, Arnie], the lover of
Sheilah, I b
does not share the joy of his com-
rades. He was told by his leader,
Jephthah, whom he worships, that
he, Jephthah, was driven out of
his home, that the elders did noth-
ing to prevent his father and his
brother from expatriating him.
The envoys finally appear, and
Jephthah is happy to accept lead-
ership. He is in fact over anxious.
So anxious that in a moment of
over•tnxiety he makes a vow, a
rash vow that whoever will come
out of his house when he returns
from Ammon will be offered as a
burnt sacrifice to God.
At the end of the first act we
see them all marching to the bat-
tlefield, the women leaving the
land of Tob for Mizpah, the main
city of Gilead.
In the second act we find
Sheilah and her maidens making
preparations to receive Jephthah,
judge in Israel, and his troops.
Sheilah, his daughter, is the first
one to go out of the house to meet
her father, and here the dramatic
side of the play reaches its height.
The act ends with Sheilah depart-
ing for the hills,
In the third act we find Sheilah
a recluse in the hills. Her father,
her lover and Shamah, and an old
friend, visit her, but they do not
exist for her. She lives the inner
life of a hermit. Crushed and
atved, they withdraw.
