Because of his severity to crimi-

against his life and during the time
he sat as county judge he never
went without a bodyguard. He
dispensed with the bodyguard after
he was elevated to the Supreme
Court bench but even then would
never enter a crowded elevator.
He demanded that he be alone in
the elevator.
That the threats against him
were not idle ones was shown by
the fact that after one such docu-

his career, a bomb was exploded
in front of the Bronk Courthouse.
The jurist escaped injury but the
bomb caused much damage. The

Justice Gibbs served in the legis-
lature in 1913 and while there took
an active part in promoting the
legislation which made the Bronx
into a county. He was made the
first judge of the new county after
a bitter political fight which split
the Democratic organizations
there. However, at the expiration
of his term he was renominated
with the endorsement of both
parties.
He was a member of the Na-
tional Democratic Club, the State
Bar Association, Bronx County
Bar Association, Society of !Medi-
cal Jurisprudence, an honorary
member of the Veterans of For-
eign Wars, and took an active in-
terest in Jewish charities.
He left his wife, Anna White
Gibbs, a son, Howard, who is a
student at Rutgers College, and
two daughters, }lariat and Isadora.
Flags of the Brunk and Manhat-
tan courthouses were flown at half
mast when news of the death
reached the city. A number of his
associates on the bench paid trib-
ute to his ability as a jurist and his
personal probity.
