While !stalking wrote his drama
to prepare Germany and Europe
for the reception of the Jew into
its common life, Mendelseohn be-
gan, indirectly and unconacionslr,
as usual, to prepare his own peo-
ple for the coming reception. He
had hit upon the clever device of
trashing his children both Hebrew
and German at the elm. time by
translating the Bible for them
from Hebrew into German. His
friends began to unit h Vu pub-

This younger generation haring

would stop at nothing until their
Germanization was complete. This
younger generation did not look
at Mendelasohn and say, Here is
a Jew who combines strict adher-

lure. We, too, can remain loyal
to our faith and at the name time
share in the good things of Euro-
pean life. That did not enter their
minds at all. They felt only the
allure of the life outside of the
ghetto. Philosophy, science, art,

younger generation of German
this Sunday evening, at the Mac.
Jewry straight to the baptismal
fount Fully half of the Jews of
Berlin in the generation before
Mende:se/An were baptized. His
most beautiful and brilliant
daughter, Dorothea, married the
German philotopher, Schlegel, and
together with him became Cath-
olic; and hie grandson, the musical
prodigy, Felix, was baptized while
yet a child.

The tomes of his children be-
came the literary salons of Ger-
many, the meeting place of ar-
tists, musicians and men of let-
ters, the centers of brilliant con-
vereation, the fountain-springs of
German creative genius. But all
of this was achieved at the cost of
Judaism. It is difficult from the
vantage point of our time to see
how Judaism managed at all to
survive this sudden plunge into
European culture which Mendels.
*oho unwittingly initiated among
his people.
Yet, his answer to the king was
correct. No man knows where he
is going.
Dignity la Restored.

If Judaism survived it was be-
cause after the intense uxciternent
about modernity had abated, there
asserted itself something which is
best termed the Jewish will-to-
lire. Another group of young
Jews arose who felt that there Was
something wasteful and irrespon-
sible about the easy abandonmert
of Judaism. Did not the Jewish
people have a cultural wealth of
its own! Did it not have the Ile-
brew language? Did it not have
a rational faith? Did it not have •
great ideals! Why this total loss'
of group pride? Why this abject
surrender? Ti.. Jews could afford
to exchange gifts with European
culture on a plane of equality. Re-
form Judaism came to show that
a man could be thoroughly at
home in German culture without
nacrificieg the essential's of the
Jewish faith. The Zionist move-
merit came with the hope that the
kW, had not only a great cultural
part, but that in a center of its

Jewish dignity reasserted
The floor of apostasy, started by
the strange little philosopher who
did not know where he was going,
has been stayed.
The Jew of today senses too
keenly the worth of his apiritstal
heritage to do what Mendelesohn's
children did. The Mendelasohn
saga may be viewed as an impor-
tant 'sociological experiment. It
has taught us one thing definitely.
That for the Jew to adopt himself
to German, French, English or
American culture is no task at all.
Given the opportunity, such adap-
tation i s 'simple, natural, easy,
fast. The Mendebosohne have
proved that. The challenging task
is for the Jew to remain true to
himself. Culture, spirituality,
idealism are so rare, Humanity
cannot afford to lose any of its
spiritual heritages, any of its cul-
tural groupings. We,,have learned
: from the Mendelssohna that We
JeWn serve mankind best when we
stand guard over the heritage of
the Jew.
