FRIED IN KOSHER CRISCO CHARITY BALL TO Called a Master Things You Ought to Know. In prehistoric times man found it necessary to count, but the only means he knew of were his fingers and toes. As he had 10 toes and 10 fingers, it was natural for him to count in tens and he has been doing it ever since. We restrict the usage to our fingers, leaving our toes in our shoes, of course. Prehistoric man used fingers and toes, and so could count 20 before beginning over again. Little chil- dren today sometimes count with their fingers, but when they reach 10, they have to start again.
