onides, then outlined the history of
the hospital movement. In view
of other communal demands, he re-
ported, there were leaders in the
Jewish Welfare Federation who I
favored postponing action on a hos-
pital. Ile concluded front it that
while the need for a hospital is in-
creasing, the diimand is decreasing,
and quoted opinions that the doc-
tors are to blame for not having'
educated the community to the!
gravity of the problem.
- Drs. J. Gilbert Israel, S. Kahn,
Max Kohn, and others pointed to
the manner in which Orthodox
Jews are handicapped by food and,
in instancea when they are placed
In Catholic hospitals, by the non-
Jewish environment. Dr. N. E.
Aronstam denied that there is need
for recourse to Gentile physicians
in manning a hospital, and ex-
pressed the belief that there are
enough good men among the Jew-
ish doctors to form a good hospital
staff.

Milford Stern and Judge Harry
B. Keidan, vice-presidents of the
Jewish Welfare Federation, and
Philip Slomovitz, the laymen pres-
ent at the meeting, were called up-
on for expressions of opinion after
the doctors had presented their
problems and repeated their re-:
quests for the construction of a
hospital.
Mr. Stern pointed out that for
many years members Of the Feder-
ation were cognizant of the hospi-
tal situation, but that the demands
that arose for the relief of war
and pogrom-stricken European
Jews interfered with the planned
program. Ile pointed out that the
community has cultural as well as
relief requirements, that the juve-
nile situation is serious and that
there are needs for welfare cen-
ters and "Y's". The building of a
Jewish center is just an important
as the building of a hospital, he
gab!, and declared that the prob-
lem of raising the $2,500,000 need-
ed in the coming three years for
a hospital, center and Ilebrew edu-
cation, is not to be minimized.
Mr. Stern pointed out that in or-
der to raise such a large sum it is
first necessary to secure half of it
from a dozen individuals. He as-
sured the physicians that the inem-
berg of the executive committee of
the Jewish Welfare Federation are
convinced of the need for a hospi-
tal, and that they will do all that is
possible to fulfil their obligations
to the um :nullity.
Jews' Obligation to City.
Judge Keidan similarly assured
the doctors of the determination of
the Federation to build a hospital.
He said that there has not been a
I meeting in the past two or three
yearn at which the hospital ques-
tion was not among the prime prob-
lems discussed. If a hospital is to
be built, he said, it will have to be
built by the Federation.
Judge Keidan said he was op-
posed to the building of a "Jewish"
hospital, Just as he would oppose
the building of a "Catholic' or
"Protestant" hospital, but that he
favors a hospital built, managed,
financed and conducted by Jews.
Because Detroit is underhospital-
iced, he said, Jews owe it to their
city to build one. He added that
he is opposed to such a hospital un-
less we can have one as good an
any, and declared he felt certain
that before long Detroit Jews will
have a hospital as tine as any now
in existence.
Mr. Slomovitz urged that the
doctors continue to propagate the
need for a hospital, educating the
community to their problems and
to the problems of their patients,
that the demand for such an insti-
tution should bring early action
for it.
