on Sept. 21, the Day id Atone-
ment, the White Paper of the Brit-
ish government concerning the
Wailing Wall incident, contains a
statement of the facts and a dec-
laration that the administration
of Palestine intimds to maintain
the established Jewish right of
access to the Holy Site.
The White Paper, written by
Col. Leopold II. Amery, Secrets y
of State for the Colonies, refers
to the communique of the Palestine
government dated Sept. 26 and ex-
plains that the intervention of the
police was caused, as the Jewish
action constituted an infraction of
the status quo Of the Wall. The
paper further explains the Jewish
rights to the Wall during the Turk-
ish regime, underlining the rul-
ing of 1912 prohibiting Jews to
erect a screen on the Wall pave-
ment. The White Paper empha-
sizes this year's innovations at the
Wall on Yea Kippur were made
the cause of the complaints of the
Mufti in charge of the Wakf (Mos-
lem religious property) to the Pal-
estine government, necessitating
immediate action according to the
practice not to create precedent
contradictory to the status quo the
Palestine government is obliged to
maintain under the terms of the
Mandate.
To Maintain Jewish Rights.
The British government regards
it as their duty and have the in-
tention to maintain the established
Jewish right of access to the pave-
ment in front of the Wall for the
purposes of devotion. They are
also entitled to bring appurte-
nances as permitted under the
Turkish regime. It is inconsistent,
however, with the duties of the
Mandate, to endeavor to compel
the Moslem owners to accord ex-

The chances are also lessened
for a mutual arrangement between
Jews and Moslems because public
opinion in Palestine has removed
the incident from the religious or-
bit into a political and racial ques-
tion, which has intensified the dif-
ficulties. Nevertheless, the l'ales-
tine government has approached
the Zionist Executive as well as
the :Moslem Council, suggesting
that they agree on a mutual prol-
ix•] regulating the conduct of
services in a manner satisfactory
to the normal liturgical require-
ments without prejudice to the
legal rights of the Moslems. In
this connection the government
has also instructed the senior of-
ficer to feel out the ground with
both parties as to whether an ar-
rangement is possible which, if
achieved, the British government

THE FEAST OF LIGHTS

Beginning with Friday evening, Dee. 7, Jewry the world over
will open its eight-day celebration of the Feast of Lights--
Chanukah. This festival records one of the decisive victories
of ancient Israel over the powerful cultural forces then lurk-
ing round about Palestine, threatening to uproot Judaism from
the hearts of the Jewish people. For this reason, the sig,nifi-
entice 1.f this mid-winter celebration is of paramount value to
Jewry today, and its message bears import to the world at

large.

Around 200 B. C. E. the Syrian kings conquered Judea.
Palestine, as is well known, is the corridor to Egypt. For this
reason, the conquest of this buffer-state was of chief impor-
tance to Syria in its ambition to overthrow- the Roman rule in
Egypt that was then rising in the Oriental world. With a
mighty army, Antiochus Epiphany') invaded Judea and made
his entrance into Jerusalem. There he put to death many of
its noble dwellers and leaders. He plundered the Temple and
desecrated the altar.

But in order to dominate Palestine in its entirety and to
turn it into a Syrian province, Antiochus thought it essential
to establish the culture of his homeland in Jerusalem. The
pure Hellenism had not then penetrated into the Oriental world.
The Syrians, therefore, had a crude conception of the Greek
culture of ancient Athens; they adopted the savage beliefs
and barbaric practices of the Greek masses. And this half-
Ilellenized culture Antiochus sought to plant in the soil of
Palestine. Ile burned the Torah and forbade its study under
penalty of death. Ile tortured all who continued to practice
the Jewish customs, and rewarded those who publicly re-
nounced their Judaism. Thus, by dint of persecution, he
strove to destroy Judaism as the living guide for the Jewish
people.

Many Jews, indeed, deserted the Jewish cause, and openly
embraced the way of the Syrians.
But the faithful few
remained unswerving in their loyally to the sacred principles
of Judaism. This sturdy spirit of the loyal group, best exem-
pliffeil in the heroism of the Maccabees, finally caused the
Jews to take up arms and tight against the Syrian forces with
all their strength. The Syrians suffered defeat; the Maccabees
entered Jerusalem and reclaimed the temple, in 165 B. C. E.
By rededicating the Temple to the service of the One God,
Israel then rededicated itself to hold fast to the truths of its
heroic prophets and teachers.
