Hadassah's Luncheon.

The excellent health conditions among the Jewish
settlers in Palestine is due to the efforts of the medical
organization sponsored by Hadassah, the Women's
Zionist Organization of America. Thanks to Hadas-
sah's accomplishments, Jews have the lowest death
rate in Palestine, their adult mortality being 13 per
thousand as compared with 20 among Christians and
30 among Moslems. Infant mortality is 115 per thou-
sand among Jews as compared with 187 among Chris-
tians and 217 among Moslems. ,.
Thanks to Hadassah also, skin diseases have been
reduced to a minimum in Jewish schools, and the Ori-
ental eye scourge, trachoma, has been reduced to 10
per cent among the 23,000 Jewish school children in-
spected by liadassah's physicians and nurses, as com-
pared with 62 per cent of the pupils in the non-Jewish
schools. A single paragraph from an Hadassah news
letter speaks volumes in compliment to other achieve-
ments of this women's movement:

JOSEPH.

Well, I am very happy that my good friend Rabbi Leo
M. Franklin of Detroit has been granted a year's vaca-
tion for travel and study by his congregation, which he
has faithfully served for 30 years. Dr. Franklin is one
of the most popular members o f the American Rab-
binate, who, by his engaging pers onality, has won the
high regard and affection of his colleagues. Ile has been
one of the outstanding leaders in American Jewry, and
contributed a lifetime of constructive service to his co-
religionists.
It was through his efforts that Congregation Beth El
is recognized as one of the leading and most prosperous
congregations in the entire American Jewry. But his
influence extends far beyond mere congregational limits,
and he has been a vital force in every issue that has
affected the Jews nationally. I know that I voice the
sentiment of thousands throughout the country when I

and for the Young Men's Hebrew Association. In
every case his gift liberally matched the contributions
of the largest givers among the Jews.
His latest gift places Mr. Rockefeller in the highest
ranks of philanthropy, and the fact that he is among
the largest givers to a strictly Jewish movement per-
petuates his name among the noblest humanitarians.
It acts as a reminder to Jews and non-Jews that noble
giving to worthy causes rises above partisan or sectar-
ian lines. It is to Mr. Rockefeller's credit that he is
among the first to rise above partisanship and that he
has learned the true meaning of charity.

A Reservoir for Rabbis.

The call that came to Rabbi Harold F. Reinhart of
Sacramento. Cal., to become Senior Rabbi of Berkeley
Street Synagogue, London. England, emphasizes the
point frequently made that the United States has be-
come a reservoir upon which English Jewry is drawing
for its rabbis.
Thus, the Chief Rabbi of England, Dr. Joseph
Hertz, is a graduate of the Jewish Theological Semi-
nary of New York. The two rabbis of the London Lib-
eral Jewish Synagogue, Israel Mattuck and Solomon
E. Starrels are graduates of the Hebrew Union College
of Cincinnati, of which the late Dr. Joel Blau, who for
a time filled the Liberal Synagogue pulpit. was also
a graduate.
Hope is expressed from time to time that this coun-
try. in view of its commanding position in point of
Jewish numbers, may also, before long, occupy first
place in world Jewry in point of Jewish learning and
cultural contributions. The fact that we are already
the reservoir for rabbis offers some hope that this
dream may conic true even on this Jewishly barren
soil.

many whose parents have incomes of $25,000 a year.
They are taught as their father was taught, the true

stooping to the low level of the snob.

The Fidelity and Casualty Company of New York,
which advertises itself as the pioneer bonding company

require correction. A copy which was sent to me has a
space which the applicant must fill regarding his
"Lineage or Birh," and he is asked to report whether he
is "American. English, German, Hebrew. Negro, etc."
What interests me is what shall I enter? I am an
American, native born. I am a Jew, or as the company
intimates, a Hebrew, by religion. I am not conscious
that I am a member of a "Hebrew Race," nor am I a
Jew, nationalistically speaking. I believe myself to he a
member of a spiritual group called "Jews." Why, then,
am I asked to decide whether I am an American or a Ile-
phew? I do not notice the term "Catholic" or "Protest-
ant." in what way am I different from my American
fellow-citizens, except in the matter of religion?
If I answer that I am a Hebrew, then I automatically,

am an American. What am I to do? I present this prob-

and ask them how to solve it?
Will they please advise me why it is necessary to

observe that a German and an Englishman are
required to be specific. Well, I am willing to go along
on that basis. Perhaps I am an English Jew or a Jewish
Englishman. When then? Am I an Englishman or am I
a Hebrew? I do not like to hurt the feelings of such a
fine body of men as govern such an outstanding company,
but I think that perhaps they had something special in
mind when they inserted that word "Hebrew." I am
anxious to know. If you know the local agent, perhaps
you will call his attention to the matter, and have him
query his home office. Frankly speaking, I don't like
that form.
