During. the course of his remarks,
Mr. Marshall said:
"I am not a Zionist, that is, not
a member of the Zionist Organiza-
tion, but I have been asked to par-
ticipate on this occasion on behalf
of those Jews of America who are
not members of the organization.
While I recognize the deep feeling
that has actuated my friend,
fudge Lewis, in his closing re-
mark, when he said that none can
ft el more the obligation that is
awed for the acts of Lord Allen-
by than the Zionist Organization,
I wish to correct the statement by
saying that there are at least
others of the JeWish people who
at least equal the Zionist Organi-
zation in, their loyalty and fealty
and affestion for Lord Allenby.
A Debt of Gratitude,
"There is no Jew deserving of
the name, whose heart does not
thrill when he considers the
achievement of our honored guest.
It stems to sic like a new hook of
the Billie that has been written by
Lord Allenby on the sacred soil of
Palestine, a new chapter, at least,
in the historic records of our peo-
ple. For centuries, Palestine was
under the harrow, under the con-
trol of a government—if it might
he called a government—that had
no sympathy with the people, and
had no idea as to what the duties
of a government were, The shack-
les of slavery rested upon all of
the inhabitants, and those faithful
Jews who had gone to Palestine
to die, found themselves bereft of
rights, to say nothing of privileges,
and really remained there for no
other purpose than to (lie, because
there was no hope of living in that
country, Through all the centur-
ies the western world had tried to
free Palestine from its yoke, but
all in vain. Even Napoleon, the
greatest military hero and general
of the centuries, found himself
unable to penetrate that country

and to achieve what he had intend-
ed to accomplish. It remained for
Lord Allenby to wrest the shack-
les from those upon whom they
had rested, to bring freedom and
liberty and civilization into that
country which has attracted the
hearts of all mankind wor 30 cen-
turies.
"We feel a great debt of grati-
tude towards the great country of
which Lord Allenby is a citizen.
It is that country which has been,
for centuries, the cradle of liberty,
a land which has inculcated
throughout the world the idea of
humanity, and all that it betokens;
and particularly, we of the Jew-
ish faith, who after we had been
driven fr•m pillar to post, we are
invited to return to Great Britain
by Cromwell in the year 1858; and
from that time on, we have enjoyed
their rights and privileges which
had been yearned for by the Jews
for ages.
"And finally, during this war,
while the conflict was going on,
there emerged two names, two
names which are written in letters
of gold on the pages of our his-
tory, as well as these of Great
Britain,—Lord Allenby and Lord
Balfour. Lord Allenby had indi-
cated, by his acts, that Palestine
was to be wrested from the Turk.
Five weeks before he entered Je-
rusalem, Lord Balfour issued his
historic declaration, and then, in a
very short time, came the end of
those years of agony that the
world has suffered, and Palestine
was freed. fhese two names—
whether we are Zionists or non-
Zionists—are considered as names
which we read with those of our
great worthies of the ages,—of
our great prophets and teachers in
Jewish life. They are of us, we
love them, we' cherish them, we
shall never forget them.
"1 wish to say to you, Lord Al-
lenby, that although your grate-
ful country has honored you, and
has indicated what it feels toward
you, you will never know the depth
of the gratitude, of the love, of
the esteem, which every right-

SAMOILOVITCH PROUD
TO BE KNOWN AS JEW

MOSCOW.—(J, T. A.1—Ru-
dolph Samoilovitch, commander of
the ice-breaker Krassin which res-
cued the cress of General Nobile's
airship Italia, arrived in Moscow.
Interview by the correspondent of
the Jewish Telegraphic Agency,
Samoiloivtch declared that he is
proud that he never concealed his
Jewish origin. He considers it an
honor to belong to such a distin-
guished people, the most humani•
tarian race, he stated.
During the Odessa pogrom of
1905, Samoilovitch led a self de-
fense group of 38, of whom only
seven survived. In 1909 he was
asked by the Czarist government
to join a Polar commission, he re-
lated. In reply he wired that he
cannot conic because Jews were
forbidden to enter the capital.
Later he accepted a special invi-
tation, but declared at the session
that he was a Jew and would with-
draw if he is not desired. Upon
being pressed to remain, he as-
sented.
Samoilovitch stated that he con-
tinues to be interested in Jewish
affairs and hopes to visit America,'
when he will have an opportunity
to see American Jews.
