"A Group of American Jewish
Friends of the Yemenite Jews of
Palestine," in New York, last
week issued a pamphlet by Maxi-
milian Ilurwitz, entitled 'Israel's
Stepchildren," and containing an
appeal in behalf of these Jews in
Palestine.
The pamphlet, which contains a
vivid description of the life of the
Yemenite Jews, describes their ex-
istence in Yemen as well as in
Palestine. The author expresses
the hope that Jewish public opin-
ion will be roused to the plight of
these people, that they may estab-
lish themselves materially and
spiritually.
The American Relief Society
for the Yemenite Jews, with offices
at 151 Nassau street, New York.
has adopted the following program
for the establishment of Yemen-
, ites on rural settlements in Pales-
; tine:
I
"The establishment of the `Zeal-
enite Jews in Palestine is one of
f the outstanding problems of pres-
ent day Jewish immigration and
Colonization.
"It is also a matter of great
concern to all American Jews to
whom the Yemenites apply for
support of their eleemosnar•, re-
ligious and educational institu-
tions in Palestine, and who would
/ want to help them in a construe-
, tire way, eliminating the expens-
ea of highly-paid collectors and re-
current appeals.
! "To solve this problem in a sound,
business-like way, we propose:
,J "The raising of $300,000 (by
I subscriptions of $5, $10, $25, $100,
I and over).
This munsy is to serve as a loan
fund for the establishment of 300
ii Yemenite families on self-uspport-
1 ing homesteads, based on poultry-
farming and plantations, the ap-
proximate cost of each homestead
being $1,000.
"The money realized from the
payments of principal and inter-
est on these loans is to be divided
! into three separate funds, which
' are to housed as folows:
"1. To support all the Yemen-
I
ite philanthropic, educational and
religious institutions in Palestine.
"2. To further establish such
self-supporting homesteads.
"3. To repatriate the persecuted
Jews of Yemen to Palestine.
"Each homestead is to bear the
f
name of one individual donor of
$1,000, or the names of co-work-
ers raising $1,000, or the name of
any congregation, organization or
community providing for esta b-
lishment of one homestead."

I WOULD ASK THE JEWISH YOUTH

By AARON KURLAND

Because it has been truly said
that to the youth belongs the fu-
ture and because the future of the
Jew belongs to you, Jewish youth,
I would speak to you.
And I would question:
Into what form will you mold
this Jewish future? What are
your dreams, your aspirations,
your hopes for the future of your
people?
Do you ever dream of assuming
leadership and responsibility in

Jewish communal life? Does the
story of Jewish idealism, of Jew-
ish heroism seem real and inspir-
ing to you? Does the story of
Jewish suffering, of Jewish exile,
give you the feeling of being
chained to the chariot of a what.,
history, the history of a great peo-
ple battling for idealism?
Or do you look at this Jewish
life with disdain and with disap-
proval? Does this whole Jewish
business seem alien to you? Its

In Palestine Jewish Birth Rate
and Mortality Figures Lower

Christians.

SUCCOIH
GREETINGS

JERUSALENL-P. C.)-The
annual report of the Depart-
ment of Health of the Govern-
ment of Palestine for 1927, re-
cently issued, contains some in-
teresting figures of vital statis-
tics in the country. While the
birth-rate among the Jews (35
per thousand) was lower than
either that among Moslems,
which was 56 per thousand, or
among Christians, which was
39 per thousand, Jewish mor-
tality was considerably lower
than either Misdeal or Chris-
tian.
Thus the report shows
the death rate among Moslems
to have been 35 per thousand
and among Christians 20 per
thousand; among Jews it was
13 per thousand. The infant
mortality rate was 217 per
thousand for the Moslem s tpu-
tuition, 187 for the Christian
and 115 among the Jews. The
eamparatively hs• figures for
Jewish infant mortality is due
to a large extent to the valu-
able work of the Jewish Infant
Welfare Centers c u nilucted,
chiefly, by the Hadassah Medi-
cal Organization, which main-
tains 21 such centers through-
out the country.
The general birth rate in Pal-
estine during 1927 was 50 per
thousand; general death rate,
28 per thousand, and n general
infant mortality, 211(1 per thou-
sand, the last showing a rise
from last year's figure of 163
s pur thousand.

MICHELSON'S TESTS
PROVE HIS SPEED
OF LIGHT THEORY

NEW YORK.-(J. T. A.)-The
Michelson tests of the speed of
light have been substantiated in
new experiments just completed
at Pasadena, Calif., Prof. Albert
A. Michelson, of the University of
Chicago, has announced, an Asso-
ciated I'ress dispatch from Pasa-
dena states.
News of the experiments came
as Professor Michelson prepared
to leave on Saturday for Chi-
cago, where he will resume his lec-
ture course at the University of
Chicago on Oct. 1.
The speed of light was estimated
by the physicist to be approxi-
mately 186,284 miles a second.
Had the accuracy of the original
experiments here two years ago
been known then, further tests
never would have been necessary,
Professor Michelson said.
The original Michelson theory
of the speed of light generally has
been recognized as the basis for
the Einstein theory of relativity.
About a year ago other scientists
reported tests which tended to
contradict Michelson's t experi-
ments.
