ANNUAL CALENDAR
ISSUED BY J. N. F.

GOTHAM

IS81.11,

Continuing a custom inaugur-
ated some years ago, the Jewish
National Fund of America has
just issued its Jewish almanac and
calendar for the year 56149, be-
ginning with Sept. 15, the first
day of Rosh Ilashonah. The an-
nouncement of publication of the
almanac invites all Jews to obtain
copies of the booklet, which are
free, either from the national of-
fices, III Fifth avenue, New York
City, or from the local branch of
the Jewish National Fund, of
which A. Koffman is chairman, at
the Kirby Center.
The almanac contains a com-
prehensive account of the objects
of the Jewish National Fund in
Palestine as well as a succint story
of what the National Fund has al-
ready accomplished toward the re-
construction of the Jewish Nation-
al Homeland. The booklet also
contains various items of Inter-
voting information about Pales-
tine, covering its geography, pop-
ulation, customs, institutions and
colonies.
In a brief review of the past
year in Palestine, the almanac
points out that ''the .lewish Na-
tional Fund acquired a further
114,000 dunams of land Ind entered
into negotiations for the purchase
of a stretch of 50,000 dunums, the
incline for which are being raised
by the Jews of Canada, following
the visit there of Mr. Ussishkin.
It carried out important amelior-
ation works on its land, including
the drainage of the River Kishon
area. Many water supply stations
were installed in new village, and
an additional 50,000 trees plant-
ed."
The almanac also reveals that
; nearly 8,000 people live in 42 vil-
lages on the soil of the Jewish Na-
tional Fund. This land has been
drained of marshes by the Fund
which has also provided 34 vit.
!ages with direct water supply. A
half million trees have already
been planted by the Fund,
