A review of the athletic ex-
ploits of our Jewish athletes for
the past year is replete with start-
ling individual performers. The
biggest event, if from a publicity
angle only, in the history of Jew-
ish sport, was the debut of Andy
Cohen as second baseman for the
New York Giants. Cohen is just
another second baseman but be-
cause he is a Jew a great furor
was made over his entrance into
the big league. It proves, among
other things, that the sport pro-
moters are very anxious to attract
Jewish patronage to their games.
Cohen started off with a bang and
the publicity increased to such pro-
portions that an uninformed ob-
server might get the impression
that Cohen woo a combination of
Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb and Rodger
Hornsby. At that Andy is big
league stuff and he's in the game
to stay,
The only other Jew 'in the big
leagues was Moe Berg, catcher for
the Chicago White Sox. Moe fin-
ished his second year but for some
reason got little mention on the
score of his Jewishness. In the
minor leagues, Jonah Goldman,
who was farmed out by Cleveland
to the Decatur team of the Three
'I" league, starred in the bushes
and will be seen with the Indians
next fall. Sully Mishik, of foot-
ball fame and for two years first
baseman for the San Francisco
Seals, was released by the coast
team. The New York Yankees
immediately signed him for 1929.
Ike Goldstein, a pitcher for the
Wheeling team of West Virginia,
did no well that he was signed
with the Detroit T i ge rs. lie at-
tracted attention because of his
nationality.
