LANSING-CITY OF DIVERSIFIED
INDUSTRIES
Known tdmost people as Michi-
gan's Capital City, as a beautiful
and restful residential community
with splendid cultural and educa-
tional advantages—Lansing's in-
dustrial growth has been empha-
sized all too little. A recent study
shows that she is probably the
most rapidly growing capital city
in the United States. Comparison
with other Michigan cities shows
that Lansing ranks second among
Michigan cities in the comparative
percentage of increase in the num-
ber of wage earners, in the cum-
automobile factories, Lansing's in-
dustries are splendidly diversified
and she is known in many foreign
countries through products which
have no connection with the auto-
mobile.
She is, furthermore, attracting
much attention as a wholesale and
distributing center. And she has
splendid stores and hotels. She is
a popular convention city. With
a business background such as this
Lansing may well look to the fu-
ture with confidence.

vision the people perish." The
writer is impressed with the fact
that a group of Lansing people
with real vision are even now plan-
ning to make this city and East
Lansing the real musical center of
Michigan. This move, along with
her forward-looking policy,of pro-
viding the best in schools, in
churches and character-moulding
institutions as well as in parks and
playgrounds spells almost certain
growth and progress.
One more thought—research de-
parative increase in value of pro-
ducts produced, and in the com-
parative increase in total wages
paid between 1899 and 1925—and
fourth in comparative increase in
population between 1901 and

velops the fact that no American
city which has passed the 100,000
mark in population has ever
slipped back under that figure.
For Lansing that figure is just
around the corner. So, in the esti-
mation of the writer, Lansing's fu-
ture is a very promising one. If
her people will continue to think
together and work together there
seems no reason to believe that the
years to conic will be anything
but happy and prosperous ones.
The latest official figures avail-
able covering Lansing's payroll are
those compiled from statements
furnished by the manufacturers
under the Workmen's Compensa-
tion Act. These figures show a
total payroll for Lansing for the
year 1927 as $29,452,360.
Accurate records on number of
men employed in 18 leading indus-
tries of Lansing show a greater
number of men employed at the
present time than at any other
time for the past seven years. The
peak of employment for the pres-
ent year was reached for the
week ending July 21, when the rec-
ords showed 16,857 men employed
in the above mentioned 18 indus-
tries. At no time for the past
seven years has employment in
these same industries exceeded
15,1)00.
The number of men employed
in Lansing's 18 leading industries
constitute about 80-85 per cent of
total factory employment.
