TEN REASONS WHY YOU
SHOULD STUDY HEBREW

By SHOLOM ALEICHEM

Can you think of 10 reasons

(Translated by Hanah Berman.)

/

There were nine of us in the
whole railway-carriage, nine Jews.
We wanted a tenth to make a Mill-
yen.
In reality, there was a tenth al-
so, but the tenth was to us doubt-
ful. We could not decide whether
he was a Jew or a Gentile. A silent
person, with gold pincenez, a child-
ish, pock-pitted face, but beardless,
but a Jewish nose, and a moustache
peculiarly twisted upwards, pro-
. trading ears, but a red neck. The
whole time he kept quite apart from
us, looking through the window,
and whistling. Of course, he was
hatless, and had a Russian news-
paper on his knee. And, hush! Not
a wool' did he let out. Ile was a
Russian through and through, a
pure Ivan. What? Once again.
Can he really he a Gentile? But
surely he is, after all, not a Gen-
' tile? Rubbish! A Jew cannot de-
ceive Jews. A Jew will recognize
a Jew a mile off, on a dark night.
Surely, one would know a Gentile!
No, he is a Jew. May I have a lump
of gold the size of that Jew! But,
once more. What if he is not? Now-
adays there are no questions to be
asked So, we decided: The
same old story. A Jew, poor thing;
wants others to, at any rate, think
he is a Gentile. May it do him
good! But, what were we to do
when we were short of a tenth?
There was a "Jahrzeit" in. the car-
riage. You think that it was just
an ordinary "Jahrzeit?" A Jahr-
zeit" after a father? Or a mother?
No, this was 0 "Jahrzeit" after a
child, after a son, a Jew had bur-
ied. He had only just managed to
get him out of the prison authori-
ties, after the event, so that he
might be buried according to Jew-
ish rites.. The father took his
oath on it that he had been innocent
before God. He had been condemned
too quickly; that is to say, he had
really been a scamp among scamps,
said he; but he should not have
been hanged. But he had been
hanged—and all was lost! The
mother died soon after him; that is
to say, not so soon. Oho! She first
suffered a great deal, herself suf-
fered, and made him grey and old.
"How old do you think I am al-
together?"
We all looked at the man, and
tried to guess how old he was. It
was imposible. Young eyes, grey
hair; a wrinkled brow, a smiling-
weeping face. And the whole man
—somehow, a peculiar man; really
a short jacket, but a longish one;
really a big hat, but pushed back
on his head; really a little beard,
but very much rounded. And

. . . Ach! Eyes! such eyes! Who-
ever has seen them one, will never,
never forget them, smiling-weeping,
or weeping-smiling eyes... Even if
he had bewailed his fate, even if
he dropped a tear. But, no! On
the contrary, he just happened to
be gay; just happened to be lively
A curious, curious creature!
"In a word, where are we to get
a tenth?" said one of the men,
throwing a glance at the whistler,
who was pretending that he did not
hear. Ile was looking through the
window and whistling a familiar
tune.
"What do you mean by a tenth?"
said another. "Have we not then
got a Minyan?"
And, he began counting his fin-
gems: Not one, not two, not three—
"Leave me out!" said the whist-
ler, and in Yiddish.
We were all astonished.

Pupils on the grounds of the Falasha School in Addis Ababa, the
capital of Abyssinia. This school was established by the American
Pro.Falasha Committee.

Are you not a Jew, then?"
"I am a Jew, but I do not believe
in these things."
For some time we all sat there r
like paralyzed, looking at one an - 1
other in silence. But, the man of
the "Jahrzeit" did not lose himself.
With his kindly-weeping smile he
said to the young man, the whist-
lee:
you live to be a hundred
and twenty years. You deserve a
go ld medal."
"Why a gold medal?"
"I will tell you. It is rather a I
long story. If you will be a tenth'
to the Minyan, I will say the Kad-
dish for my son in a minute, and
then I will tell you a fine story.
And the gay man of the "Jahr-
zeit" took out a handkerchief, tied
it shout his short jacket, and stood
up, with his face to the wall:
"Happy are they that dwell in
thy house: they will be ever prais-
ing thee (Selah)."
I do not know how it is with you.
I confess that I love the week-end
afternoon prayer. A week-day
prayer is sweeter to me than 10
cleverly-sung pieces by a Chazan,
the twirly little airs of the sab-
baths and festivals. The prayers
of the man of the "Jahrzeit," here
in the railway carriage had, to me,
so much sincerity in it, so much
soul, that it affected us all. And
it seemed to me that to the tenth
man, to the whistler also, it was
not a trifling mater to hear a fath-
er saying the Kaddish for his son.
And, along with this, the man of
the "Jahrzeit" had a sweet, lovable
voice, which seemed to be pouring
itself like olive oil right into one's
bones. And particularly—the Kad-
dish! The Kaddish! Only a stone
could have remained unmoved at
that Kaddish.
To be brief—this was an after-
noon prayer for once!
Having finished praying, and
having untied the handkerchief,
our man of the "Jahrzeit" seated
himself oposite the tenth man, and
with a gay-weeping face, as his
habit was, he began to tell the story
he had promised him. Whilst speak-
ing, he stroked his little beard, and
he talked slowly, like a man who
had tim e:
"Young man, the story which I
will tell you is, in reality, but three
stories—three tiny little stories, of
a village.
The first story happened to a
farmer. A farmer and his wife
lived in a remote village. The vil-
lage was a big village, a lot of

ing, my dear young man? They took -0
the rabbi's son in stark naked. It
was the first time in his life that
he had stood without a covering on
his head; that is to say, without a
hat. And this was his good for-
tune, because there were to be seen
on his head—may it not be thought
of by you!—a deformity, and one
which did not happen to have been
put there especially. It is possible
that it been on his head ever
since he was a child. They let him -
go his way.
Now I ask you, ray dear young
man, what do you deserve? You
are a Jew, and you wish to be a
Gentile. And. in any case, you are
the third sort of a man—a man
with a sore head.... Well, do you
not deserve a gold medal? .

In Extending to You Our Sincere Wishes for a

Wappll

A fool always finds a greater
fool to admire him.

And now, that is to say, I have
to tell you the third story. This,
you understand, happened at the
home of the rabbi himself. The
rabbi—may he live long!—had an
only son, and really a fine only boy,
possesing every good quality, as
happens in the case of a rabbi's son.
Of course, they married him off
when he was very young. They
gave him a wife, and a dowry, and
his keep forever! And, they sat
him down, that he should study the
Holy Law. So he sat and learned.
Apd everything would have gone
well and nicely... but for? ... if
there had been no conscription in
the world. Although, en the sur-
face, one might ask, "What concern
was the conscription of the rabbi's
son , ' First of all, he was an only
son. And, secondly, if it is a mat-
ter of money there would he no
difficulty on that account. But it
was in the hitter times, alas, when
they began taking only sons from
the Jews. And money was no good
either any more; not even 10,000.
A harsh official. A wicked doctor.

PERFECT VENTILATION

In Rain, Wind or Storm at All Times

Gentiles; Jews, not one. This is
to say, there was only one. On the
contrary this was better again. He
had a good means of livelihood.
How does the saying go? One
ought to settle among Gentiles. . .
There was only one thing they were
short of—children. For a long
time they had no children. Their
lives were a misery to them. It
was in their old age that God took
pity on them. The farmer's wife
bore to her husband a child, a son,
in a lucky hour. There was great
rejoicing. Then one must make a
Brio as the Lord has commanded.
On the eighth day the farmer yoked
his horses to the wagon and drove
off to the town. Ile fetched bac k
with him the Rabbi and the Shochet
and the beadle, and five more Jews.
Of course the farmer's wife had
a good dinner prepared. Every-
thing was tine, around and about.
They looked about them—there WAS
no Minyan. The tenth man was not
there. What had happened? A
tarsier's brains. Ile had counted
his wife into the Minyan. Of
course there was a great/outburst
of laughter. This way—that way!
The day does not stand still. What
is one to do? A big village. Many
Gentiles, but Jews—not comparing
them—not one! They looked out.
Right up to the inn door there
drove a hooded wagon. And, in the
wagon—a carman. Let him be a
carman, no long as he iota Jew...
"Blesed art thou who comest!"
"Peace be unto you!" "Come in, and
you will be the tenth!" ...The joy
was indescribable. Now see what
a great God we have. A whole vil-
lage of Gentiles can do nothing.
Comes one Jew, a carman only, so
to say—and all is well!
The second story, my dear ratan,
happened not in a village, but in a
town, and just in a Jewish town.
It was on the Sabbath. Friday
evening, that is, after the candles
had been lighted. They came home
from the synagogue, recited the
blessing over the wine, and washed
their hands. They sat down at the
table—and a candle bethought it-
self and began to drip grease. Of
course, they placed a Sabbath-loaf
against the spout of grease. No
use. The grease dripped on to the
table. The table-cloth blazed up.
Soon there would be a fire. What
is one to do? Put out the blaze?
One must not. The Sabbath! All
the neighbors collected in the house.
The whole street. A commotion,
an uproar! "Jews, we are lost!"...
They look about them. Khvedor,
the sabbath-Gentile. Khevedor, my
heart! Can you not see. Gentile,
how bright it is over there?" And,
although he had a peasant head,
he understood what was meant...
He spat on his hand, and with his
two thick peasant fingers he took
I hold of the wick of the candle—No
more fire! Well, I ask you: Are
the miracles of the Lord to be un-
derstood? One Gentile comes along
and saves the whole town.

language and literature? Well,
here they are:
1. To know any additional lan-
guage and literature means to
have your eyes open to another
world. It means to be more cul-
tured, more broad-minded and
more efficient in thought and ac-
tion.
2. Knowing the Hebrew lan-
guage, particularly, brings you in
contact with the spirit of your
race, with its many wanderings.
visions, sufferings and dreams.
3. Hebrew is the living spoken
tongue in Palestine, and whoever
desires to understand what is go-
ing on in the Jewish common-
wealth will have to follow up the
Hebrew newspapers, periodicals
and books published in Palestine.
4. Knowledge of the Hebrew
language enables one to read the
world's greatest book, the Bible
—that roblest mine of poetry, le-
gend, philosophy and religion, in
the original.
5. Hebrew offers the advantages
of two languages. It is both an
ancient and modern language, and
possesses the cultural values of
both.
6. Hebrew is one of the most
harmonious, most poetic languages
in the world; according to the
great American critic, Edmund
Clarence Stedman: "Every word
of Hebrew is a poem."
7. There are now three hundred
living poets, novelists, dramatists

works of literary art that delight
the readers, and add glory to the
Jewish race.
