Referring to the work of the

put in the homes of Christian
clergymen and so make available
to them Jewish material with a
Jewish point of view.

"I am especially interested,
also," he said, "in the last vol-

there is neither a permanent syna-

JEWISH SCHOLARS AT WORK
ON A POPULAR ENCYCLOPEDIA

Since 1906, when the last of 12
volumes of the Jewish Enclopedia
was published, the world has wit.
nessed changes of the utmost im-
portance to Jews. This conditio n
has augmented the demand for
either a new edition of the old
encyclopedia or the publication of
an entirely new one. and the latter
step has been undertaken by a
group interested in promulgating
Jewish culture and religion. A
popular encyclopedia is now to be
published by the Encyclopedia Ju..
dawn, Inc., and edited by Dr. Isaac
Landman, editor of the American
Hebrew.
When the Jewish Encyclopedia
consisted of 12 volumes, issued
over a period of seven years, the
new complication is expected to
contain but four or five volumes.
It has not been decided whether
the work shall be published as a
unit or individual volumes. Ac-
tual editing will start in Septem-
ber. The writing and research are
to be done by noted scholars, Jew-
ish as well as non-Jewish. The
encyclopedia is to be ready late in
1930. Already about one-quarter
of the manuscript is in the hands
of the editors.
Dr. Landman has resigned his
rabbinate in Far Rockaway in or-
der to devote his time to the en-
clyclopedia. Asked the other day
why he thought a new encyclope-
dia was needed, he said that he
"had long wanted to edit a popu-
lar encyclopedia of the Jews, but
one that would not necessarily be
for the Jews, as that was one of
the patent weaknesses of the older
concordance.
"In my years as a teacher and
rabbi," he added, "I have long
found it difficult to get material on
Jewish subjects easily and simply:
My students quickly learned that
the articles in the Jewish encyclo-
pedia were not written for the lay-
man, but rather for scholars and
rabbis. Through this new encyclo-
pedic venture I hope to be able to
provide information and instruc-
tion concerning the Jews and their
multitudinous activities for many
years to conic in a simple and
popular way."
pointed out that
his encyclopedis would be novel in
at least one respect.
Both Sides of Questions.
"It is our intention to print two
articles on every controversial sub-
ject, one on each side of a disputed
question," he said. "At first sight
this feature might seem fatuous
because such treatment for too
many arguable topics might fill up
valuable space to the exclusion of
other less disputatious but equally
important matters. But there are
not so many of these two-sided
subjects. The matter of Zionism
is, of course, the best known. The
question of Reform and Orthodox
Judaism is always a heated ques.
tion. Nationalism, immigration,
the divine inspiration of the Bible
and whether or not Moses wrote
the five books attributed to biro
are some of the more important de-
batable questions that will receive
dual treatment."
Dr. Landman pointed out that
the popular encyclopedia would
not replace the other as a source
of reference where scientific and
scholarly material is desired.
"My job will be to give the lay-
man, Gentile as well a, Jewish,"
he said, "a work where he can
find what he wants to know about
Jewish religion, customs, history,
great men, art and literature with.

treatise. For example, if some
one wants information on the story
of Chanuca, the popular encycto
