A new steel foundry, now un-
der construction in Pontiac for the
Oakland Motor Car Co., will be
completed in February, 1929.
President A. R. Clancy of the
Oakland Motor Car Co., announces
that the new foundry will include
six buildings and will add more
than 200,000 square feet of floor
space to the huge group of factory
buildings which now lie between
Baldwin, Joslyn, Kennet and Co-
lumbia roads.

The construction is in charge of
L. A. Blackburn, resident Oakland
engineer.

A chassis parts plant is also
planned, and it is expected to add
thousands to Pontiac's ever-in-
creasing population.

Pontiac Jews are proud of their
Sunday School.
At the confirmation services in
June, at which Dr. Leo M. Frank-
lin of Temple Beth El, Detroit, of-
ticiated, it was revealed that
among the elements of great prog.
ress in the community was the
Sunday School.
During the past year, under the
direction of Philip Taubman, an
added interest has been noticeable
in the school's efforts. The staff
of teachers is enthusiastic, and the
pupils are co-operative. There is
evident a spirit of sociability as
well as studiousness.
But many in the community are
not satisfied. They want still
greater progress. The women in
particular are craving for greater
effort and more of an educational
effort.
Therefore the Sisterhood, of
which Mrs. William Present is
president, is taking over the work
and hopes for a great achievement
during 1928-1929.
A special committee of the Sis-
terhood, consisting of Mrs. Nathan
Blumrosen, Mrs. Harry Waltman
and Mrs. Benjamin Goldstein, con-
stitutes the board of education.
This committee has called upon
Jacob II. Meyer, who was superin-
tendent of the Sunday School
since its formation, except during
last year, and urged that he again
take over the work. The Sister-
hood pledged the sum of $1,000
if Mr. Meyer will assume charge.
Mr. Meyer, who was president
of the l'ontiac Jewish congrega-
tion during 1926 and 192i, will.
therefore, be the superintendent
of the Sunday School during 1928-
1929.

The hart known ancient riddle is
that which mythology recounts
was propounded by the famous
sphinx of Thebes. The riddle ran
as follows: "A being with four
feet has two feet and three feet
and only one voice; but its feet
vary, and when it has most it is
weakest." The solution to this
was that it represented man, who
first of all in his infancy crawls on
all fours, in manFood stands on his
two feet, and in old age supports
himself on a stick. Forms of this
riddle crop up in Rabbinical litera.
ture, as is not wonderful with a
legend that was so popular in the
classical world. One form of this
is given as: " Two are better than
three because one disappears never
to return." In this case, of course,
the solution to the riddle is that
it is better to be able to walk on
two legs than to be obliged to use
a staff because youth does not re-
turn. In more than one place
the influence of the sphinx riddle
is noticeable in Rabbinical litera-
ture.

The well-known riddle of Sam.
son and the Philistines is another
ancient example of problems of
this kind, although the exact solu-
tion is not so neat as that of the
sphinx. In the Book of Prophets
there are examples which seem to
show that their original form was
that of a riddle, while the riddle
propounded in the Book of Eze-
kiel draws an obvious symbolic
picture concerning the Babylonian
to the eagle.
Sonic of the Talmudic riddles
are as obscure as to have defied
solution. In other cases. the an-
swer to a question has been made

Season's Greetings

An extensive and elaborate ex-
pansion program for Wailes store,
at the northeast corner of Saginaw
and Huron streets, was announce]
by E. L. Waite, president and
general manager.
Two stories are to be added to
the building, making it six floors
including basement; an addition of
the six floors extending north 211
feet and back 40 feet to the Board
of Commerce alley is to be erect-
ed; the whole of the interior of
the present store is to be remod-
eled; an up-to-the-minute lighting
and elevator system installed, and

a new marquis entrance is to he
built in the center of the 60-foot
front on Saginaw street.
The Pryale Construction COM-
pany was awarded the general
contract, and William C. Zimmer-
man, architect in the Pontiac Com-
mercial and Savings Bank Build-
ing, completed the blue prints.
Electric lighting experts install( d
an illumination system of the
latest design known in department
store science.
The two new floors and the six-
floor addition has approximately
doubled the floor area.

in symbolic form which has practi-
cally constituted a riddle. Of this
kind is the story of the rabbi and
Marcus Aurelius. When the Em-
peror asked the rabbi how he could
improve his financial position, the
rabbi replied: "By going into the
Emperor's garden, pulling up a
number of shrubs and replacing
them with younger ones." Mar-
cus took the hint and replaced his
officials by younger

HOTEL RANKS
AMONG FINEST

Naturally, the riddles in Bible
and Talmud ',excited on Jewish
writers in the Middle Ages, and in-
spired them to try their hand at
conundrums. Many of these were
written in verse during the great
period of Ilebrew versification
which occurred at the time of the
Spanish-Jewish renaissance. One
of these composed by Moses Ibn
Ezra, and the answer to which is
a taper, runs: "What is it that is
the sister of the sun, but is made
for the night; fire makes her weep,
and when she is nearly dead her
head is cut off." A better riddle
was that of Judah Ha-Levi: "It is
blind although it has an eye,
spends all its life in clothing folk
but always remains marked itself."
The answer to this riddle is " a
needle."
Many of the riddles in later
Jewish literature are not alto
gether original, and the fashion
for composing such conundrums
gradually died out. But the idea
at the back of the riddle remains
with us yet, and is still keenly en-
joyed by Jews. The modern
equivalent seems to show that the
purpose of the manufactured prob-
lem is to help us, on the one hand,
to repress the actual problems of
life, and, on the other hand, to

According to W. II. Aubrey,
managing director of the Waldron
Hotel, Pontiac, that city now of-
fers to travelers hotel accomoda-
Dons equal to those obtainable in
larger cities. It has been the cus-
tom ill the past for men who come
to Michigan to do business with
Pontiac's industries to go to De-
troit nightly because Pontiac at •
that time offered inferior stopping
over facilities, he explained.
"However, since the completion
of the Waldron Hotel it is not
necessary to go to the larger city.
The Waldron Hotel has 11)0 rooms,
it has over 70 tub and shower
baths, soft hot water is furnished
every room, there are suites with
twin beds and sample rooms are
available. The hotel enjoys an ex-
ceptionally convenient location in
the heart of Pontiac at Pike, Perry
and Mill streets.
"Every comfort and modern con-
venience has been installed. The
most modern mechanical equip-
ment available has been secured to
insure uninterrupted service. In
connection with the hotel is the
Golden Pheasant Coffee Shoppe on
the ground floor."

By S. GELBERG
Just as sopsychologists tell us,
all forms of children's play have
some basic significance as a pre-
paration for the activities which I
will be necessary in adult life, so
almost all forms of games and
amusements seem to have the ele-
ment of practice for more serious
things. Thus it is not surprising
that in very early days, man, be-
set with innumerable problems,
should amuse himself with riddles.'
