BROWN Rosh Hashonah Greetings and Sin- cere Best Wishes to My Friends, National Chairman, United Jewish Campaign. Another form of prayer, unknown to European Jews in past decades, was added to their services (luring the Iligh Holy Days, according to David A. Brown, National Chairman of the United Jewish Campaign. In pre-war days they were forced to utter prayers for the Czars and rulers despite the oppression under which they were living. Now they voluntarily offer up prayers for the welfare of their American brethren who have become their saviours during the years of war and destruction, and who are still their one hope in the rebuilding of their life. CRED I FABER REPRESENTING Several times during the past few years, Mr. Brown visited the countries of Eastern Europe and on each of these occasions he happened to spend the Iligh Holy Days in the very midst of Jewish suffering—in the cities and towns of Russia and Poland where the life-saving work of the Joint Distribution Committee was being carried on most extensively. And in the old synagogues of these cities and towns, Mr. Brown attended the Rosh Hashonah and Yom Kippur services. In the places where the people foregathered to cry out to their God in their misery, Mr. Brown learned to know the depth of their anguish and the fervor of their religious devotion. It was there that Mr. Brown heard the prayers offered up for the Jews of this country and the impression left upon him by these High Holy Day services in the synagogues of East- ern Europe, Mr. Brown has tried to convey to his many audiences in his travels throughout this coun- try on his life-saving mission. Entire Second Floor. Orr 503 Hammond ttute Formirly Detroit Land Lormw, By WM. It. BLUMENTHAL Regional Director for Northern Ohio and Michigan, U. P. A. , The past year again revealed the solidity of the Palestinian project. It again revealed the latent Jewish sentiment for the re-establishment of the Homeland. The hosts of volunteer workers who year in and year out have given without abatement of their means and of their energies is proof that we are here dealing not with an ephemereal, elee- mosynary task, but with a deep-rooted aspiration of a strong-willed people. Jews the world over have given to Palestine not only because they must give but because they want to give. Many have been the obstacles in the path of the Palestinian achievement during the year just clos- ing. Internecine warfare within the organization whose chief duty it is to create sentiment for Pales- tine has retarded the progress but has not dim- inished one iota the heroic accomplishments in the fields and valleys of Judea. I have recently seen with my own eyes the great Odyssey of the Chalut- zim and can appreciate how unimportant are the mere bickerings of personalities. The movement stands or falls not by wrangling in America, but by accomplishments in Palestine. As the year closes the first big step is taken in the organization of the Jewish Agency which is to mobilize the intellectual and financial forces that America must marshal for the economic up- building of the Homeland. With seconomic con- ditions in Palestine improving, with good prospects for the resumption of immigration—moral and financial support will surely increase from Jewry all over the world, and especially from America. we, in Detroit, in spite of unpromising economic conditions the early part of the year, have not faltered in the work for the United Palestine Ap- peal. Where actual work for Palestine was con- cerned there were no factions here. All groups worked unselfishly and as a unit! What is being accomplished is ample testimony that Palestine has fired the imagination and stirred the idealism of the Jewish people. Palestine is giving the answer to the Moloch of passive assimilation and craven annihilation. Palestine will replenish the fountain of Jewish culture and Jewish idealism, and will prove that Jewish civilization is a verity. Seventh Floor FR A N
