Bicur Cholem Society.

Miss Betty Weiss was hostess to
the board of directors of the Bicur
Cholem Society at the first meet
ing of the new season. Commit-
tees were appointed for the deriv-
ing moonlight on the steamer Co-
lumbia scheduled for Tuesday eve-
ning, Aug. 29. Samuel Wexler is
general chairman and is supervis-
ing all details. A unique member-
ship drive, original among junior
organizations, will be inaugurated
shortly, with the goal set for 100
new members. Tentative plans for
many functions have been formu-
lated, and the slogan of the or-
ganization is "Make the twentieth
year of the Bicur Cholem Society
the biggest and best."

The Northwestern branch of the
Jewish Old Folks' Home extends
gratitude to those who helped
make a success of the picnic held
last week for the inmates of the
home.

ti-Semitic practices in a Kieff fac-
tory are complained of by Der
Stern, Yiddish Communist daily
published here. In the factory
Scythe and Hammer, a group of
workers attacked a Jewish fellow
worker with iron clubs and sub-
ected hint to duckings in ice •at.

The Communist group did not
stop the perpetrators. Similar or-
urences have also taken place in
the Charkoff factory, Lenin.

APPEAL TO GORKY

DECREE ON HEBREW

the attention of the Moscow pub.
lie for the past several months.
The case concerned the brutal
mistreatment by a group of Rus-
sians, sons of formerly promi
neat merchant families, of Moses
Kaufman„Aged 60, and his family
consistinebf his wife and two
daughters. The hooligans, who
were neighbors of the Kaufman
family at No. 18a First Vozdviz-
henski Lane, Moscow, a stone a
throw from the police station,
two blocks from the prosecuting
attorney's office and 10 minutes
ride from the Supreme Court, tor-
tured the Jewish family during the
months of April and May by beat-
ing the old man every evening and
threatening to assault the young
girls. So terrorized was the old
Kaufman that he dared not com-
plain bo the authorities, having
been warned that if he did so, he
would be killed.
Information was given to the au-
thorities by a Christian neighbor ,
following a cruel scene enacted at
night at No. 18a. On the basis of
these charges, the Ogpu, secret po-
lice, arrested Audrey Lubimoff,
Semion Lichomanolf and Stephan
Gorovkin. They were tried on
June 30 by a lower court and giv-
en the following sentences: Lub-
imoff, six months in jail; Licho-
manoti and Golovkin six to nine
months. Two more neighbors,
Jelesnoff and Tchurakoff will also
be tried for instigating the at-
tacks, it was declared.
The case attracted wide atten-
tion and was discussed in a spec-
ial article in the government or-
gan, Pravda. Following the pub-
lication of the verdict the Komsom-
olskaya Pravda, Communist youth
organ, protested against the mild
sentence and demanded that the
case be appealed to a higher court
where the sentences should be in
creased.
The verdict is too mild and we
demand that the higher court im-
mediately increase the sentences,"
the paper wrote. The paper added
that the verdict caused excitement
in many factories, where severer
punishment was expected.
Action on the matter was im-
mediately taken by the district
court which ordered a retrial of
the three accused, finding the sen-
tence too mild. The court de-
clared that the accused were guilty
not only of hooliganism for which
they were sentenced, but of anti-
Semitism and they therefore de-
serve severer punishment.
Two Soviet officials, the chair-
man and the secretary of the local
Soviet in Pavlotch, district of Bel.
ozerkoff, were dismissed after
charges of anti-Semitic practices
had been brought against them.
They will he tried by the Soviet
Court.
The chairman of the Communist
Ispolkont in the district of Chmel-
nick, Isaeff, was guilty of open
anti-Jewish discrimination accord-
ing tc a complaint published by the
Yiddish Communist daily "Shtern."
Isnefl issued ordera to the local
mills to grind one pad of flour
monthly for every citizen, except-
ing the .Jews, irrespective of their
social position.
