Universal Appeal Brings Many to "Mother Machree."

complete friendship and under- hood and, inasmuch as mothers
standing between races is needed are alike in any part of the world,
than the fact that there are as there is little wonder that the pic-
many Jews as Irish visiting the Fox ture has such a universal appeal.
Belle Bennett, in the title role,
Washington Theater these days,
where "Mother Machree" is the is more convincing and gives a
better
performance than she did in
main screen attraction.
In spite of the fact that the "Stella Dallas." It would appear

situations evoke gales of laughter.
As one local reviewer puts it, Young.
"You dont' have to be Irish to Supporting Miss•Bennett are Vic-

beautiful picture founded on the Glory" fame, Neil Hamilton and
story and song by Rida Johnson Constance Howard. There is also
to
little Phillippe DeLacy, who in
this picture proves herself to be
a versatile find and who comes to
us as one of the best child actors
that filmdom has ever produced.
In its presentation at the Fox
Washington Theater, the entire ac-
companiment is played on the Fox
Moxietone by the Roxy Symphony
Orchestra and it is a genuine de-
light to both see and hear Neil
Hamilton sing the song that made
John McCormack famous.
So universal is the appeal of
the picture that it would be equal-
ly entertaining and gripping if the
title were Jewish, English or Span-
ish instead of Irish.
In addition to the feature, the
Fox Movietone, which has been
well styles "the sensation of the
age," presents Raquel Metier and
Beatrice Lillie. Each of these
popular artistes are seen and
heard in the selections that have
brought them fame. There is also
the Fox Movietone News, which
presents the latest events of the
day in both sound and motion.

SILVER FLOSS
Thurston, the famous magician,
opens a limited engagement at the
Shubert-Lafayette beginning Sun-
day afternoon, April 15. This is
the master trickster's twenty-sec-
ond annual visit to Detroit. The
engagement includes matinees Sun-
day, Thursday and Saturday.
This year the Thurston show is
bigger and more elaborate than
ever. The program contains 40
new tricks and illusions, chief
among them is the latest Thurston
illusion, "The Vanishing Whippet,"
in which a real automobile, loaded
to the mudguards with pretty girl
passengers, 10 in all, disappear on
a fully lighted stage. It is one of
the most mystifying feats this mas-
ter of illusion has ever created.
"The Mystery of the Bathing
Girls" is a Sherlock Holmes puzzle
visualized as a stage illusion. In
"Gravitation Defied," Thurston
proves-with his necromancer's
topsy-turvy logic, the impish logic
of "Alice in Wonderland"-that if
the apple had not fallen on New-
ton's head, the philosopher would
have tumbled up to the apple.
Thurston is assisted by a com-
pany of 35 and a troupe of Ilindu
fakirs from Darjeeling, India. The
engagement is an indefinite one,
with matinees Thursday and Sat-
urday.

CONSTANTINOPLE. - (J. T.
A.) - The restructions against
Turkish Jews who desire to travel
in the interior of the country con-
tinue, notwithstanding promises
made by the government to abolish
these restrictions.
The ordinance is not being en-
forced against foreign Jews. Jew-
ish merchants in Turkey are great-
ly hampered in the carrying on of
their business. In order to make a
trip they must present a special re-
quest to the district prefects who
send the application to the police
which in turn forwards the request
to the Angora government. The
various complicated formalities in-
volve a tremendous loss of time and
money.
The municipality of Adrianople
issued an ordinance prohibiting
Jewish butchers from keeping their
