on Result of Primaries; Urges
Election of J. C. Shields.
N. Kaufman, commenting on
the results in the recent Highland
I ark primaries, has made the fol-
lowing statement in a letter to the
editor of The Detroit Jewish
Chronicle: •
"The returns of the Highland
Park primaries, on March 5, indi-
cate that John C. Shields will be
our next mayor. This result should
he very gratifying to our Jewish
voters in Highland Park.
"Mr. Gittins, seeking a third
term, solicits the aid of our Jewish
people by old-ward political tactics
—that is by the idea of discredit-
ing his opponent by groundless ac-
cusations. Ile has made a special
effort to incites the Jewish vote
against his opponent Mr. Shields
by bringing out the Klan issue.
This was conclusively found to have
had no basis either in fact nor in
deed. But, Mr. Gittins having him-
self brought the issue to light, I be-
lieve that the Jewish voters of
Highland Park have the right to
inquire what Mr. Gittins' Klan af-

Easter dance to he given at the
(look-Cadillac hotel, Sunday eve -
ning, April 8. Judging from the
list of patrons and patronesses to
be announced, in next week's Chron-
icle, the affair is arousing a great
deal of interest among the younger
net of the Jericho B. A. and all
indications show that this year's
dance will prove to be the out-
standing social event of the season
in fraternal circles, the committee
in charge reports.
The entire fourth floor of the
hotel has again been secured for
this dance, and as an added at-
traction, several well known radio
stars and vaudeville headliners
from local theatres have been en-
gaged to entertain the guests.
Dancing will take place in the
Crystal and Grand ball rooms, with
the Italian Palm Gardens used as
a rest room. The music will he
provided by Bob Cruzet and his
two orchestras, the "Cotton l'ick-
ers" and "Alabama Creoles."
Those in charge of arrangements
are Maurice Bordelove, chairman;
Ben Brown, William Hacker,

Finkelstein, Purcell and lien H.
Schneider. Tickets can be pro-
cured from the members or at the
door on the night of the dance.
2 WEEKS ASSIGNED
FOR N. F. BOX WORK
National Fund Canvass Be-
gins April 7; Workers
Organize for U.P.A.
The two weeks beginning April
7 have been set aside as Jewish
National Fund Box Weeks for the
clearing of funds from all 'out-
standing boxes and for the dis-
tribution of additional boxes in
Jewish homes throughout the city.
At the meeting of the commit-
tee last Thursday evening, at the
Atkinson branch of the Shaarey
Zedek, plans for the box work
were outlined by S. Glass, chair-
man of the committee in charge.
Mr. Glass is to be assisted by a
committee consisting of Mesdames
A. Wilenkin, II. Kraft and I'.
Slomovitz as vice-chairmen; Mrs.
M. Landau, secretary; the Misses
M. Nakelsky and E. Kumin, assist-
ant secretaries, and Rabbi Reuben
Hurwitz, treasurer.
At the suggestion of Mrs. Lan-
dau, who represents Hadassah on
the National Fund Committee,
every worker will be asked to as-
sume responsibility for the distri-
bution of 10 boxes, as well as for
their clearing semi-annually.
Synagogues will be asked to
supply committees in the work,
and to supply the lists of their
memberships to be canvassed in
the distribution of the boxes.
At the last meeting, also, com-
mittees were organized to work
in the forthcoming campaign of
the United Palestine Appeal under
the direction of A. J. Koffman,
chairman of the Jewish National
Fund, who is in charge of division
No. 6 in the U. P. A. drive.
Those having boxes that have
not been cleared, or desiring boxes
in their homes, are urged to call
Mr. Hoffman at Cadillac 9776 or
Empire 1506.

B. N. Kaufman Makes Statement
filiations are. Why has he so gra-
ciously bestowed two positions of
high public office upon avowed
executives of the Klan? If, Mr.
Gittins, by presenting the Klan as
an issue proposed to ward off sus-
picion as to his true affiliations
then the resultf of the primaries
truly indicated that there are peo-
ple of understanding in Highland
Park who refuse to permit their
intelligence to be insulted.
"With the greatest diligence I
have searched the public records of
Highland l'ark arid have yet to
find one person of the Jewish faith
holding office in spite of the fact
that Mr. Gittins has made numer-
ous appointments in his four years
as mayor. Is it possible that he
has completely forgotten the 6000
Jewish voters who reside in High-
land l'ark? By discrediting his op-
ponent does he now propose to so-
licit the aid and sympathy of our
people? The results of the pri-
maries have answered my ques-
tion.
"I congratulate Mr. John C.
Shields for his attitude. Ile has
not attempted to reach his goal un-
der cover of a smoke screen of
mud slinging. He is honorable and
trustworthy and above all posses-
ses the courage of his convictions."
