NEW YORK.—(J. T. A.)—The economic crisis in Pal-
estine is disappearing and the Jewish upbuilding work in
the country is on the eve of a new period of activity.
The day when the Jewish Agency, which is to unite
Zionists and non-Zionists in the Palestine upbuilding work, will be
created is not distant.
American Jews are beginning to lose the leadership they held in
the past decade in providing the financial means fur the l'alestine
work through the Zionist fund rain-4
ing institutions, since contributions
to the Palestine funds in European
countries and South Africa are in-
creasing, making, the contribution
of American Jews smaller in pro-

LATE SENATOR FERRIS PROFESSED
FRIENDSHIP FOR JEWISH PEOPLE
''Gives Puppet Show
At Council Meeting
In Letter to Editor of Detroit Jewish Chronicle on September
3, 1923, Denied Charges of Antagonism Made Ag•inst
Him on the Eve of Election Day,
The death of United States Senator Woodbridge N. Ferris
brings to light an interesting letter in which he denied that he
had anti-Jewish sentiments, charged against him during his
candidacy for the office as wetter against the then Senator
Townsend. The charges against Mr. Ferris were then made
because of his admiration for the industrial genius of Henry
Ford.
The letter of the late Senator Ferris was slated September
3, 1923, at Rig Rapids, Mich., and was addressed to Philip
Stomovitz, managing editor of The Detroit Jewish Chronicle,
in response to a request for a Rosh Hashonah greeting to the
Jewish people of Michigan. His sstatement WIIS accompanied
the following letter in which he decried Jewish sentiment
against him, but declared he was not revengeful, and in which
he expressed sympathy for Jewish suffering, and declared
un-American all race hatred:
Your letter of August 24 at hunt, If I were a revengeful
cuss I would decline sending is message, but I ant not. In the
last campaign the Townsend Newberryorganization sent out
circulars to all Jewish citizens advising them not to vote for
me. Very few of the Jewish people did vote for me. I had
used Henry Ford as an individual example worthy of imita-
tion. My enemies took upon themselves the work of crushing
me, so far as they possibly could. I do not hold this against
the Jewish people. I know how they are persecuted even in
America.
"If the enclosed statement is of any value, publish it."
The late Senator's Rosh Ilashona statement read as follows:
"Every New Year, whatever it is, should bring joy to all of
the people of the world. We are no longer, an isolated nation.
We are one people, one brotherhood. There is 110 escape from
that ethical doctrine. I hope the Jewish New Year will bring
to the Jewish people of the world a great joy and in bringing
great joy to the Jewish people great joy to all the other peo-
ples of the earth. Every attempt to arouse race hatred is un-
American and is a violation of God's law. Through the Ferris
Institute I have come to know a great many Jewish students
and they have always maintained is warm place in my heart. I
sincerely hope that the Jewish nation as well as all other
nations may contribute to the progress of real democracy.
May all nations of the earth live together in peace and har-
mony. The Jewish holidays symbolize this sort of peace."
