East European Jews and their Rela-
tion to Jewish Life in America

By RABBI HERBERT PARZEN
Congregation Ahern; Shalom, Portland, Oregon.

The following is the fourth in a series of five articles writ-
ten by Rabbi Parzen, a former Detroiter, for The Detroit
Jewish Chronicle.

MO'OS CHITTIM

Again Being Collected To Care
For Poor During Passover;
Louis Smith in Charge.

Louis Smith, who for 27 years
devoted to the collection of Mo's
Chittim funds to care for the
needs of the poor in the com-
munity during Passover, is
again in charge of the collec-
tions.
Mr. Smith this year sacrificed
a trip to California in order to
guarantee the work for the
vaiestine collections. •
I his year, according to Mr.
Smith, elute to 10J families, or
about 400 souls, are not only lost
to the ranks of the givers to this
fund as a result of the economic
depression, but many of them
have to be added to the list of
receivers of this charity. These
men, says Mr. Smith, have con-
tributed liberally when they had
the means, and now that they
are forced to accept gifts must
be assisted equally as liberally.
These, added to the 400 fami-
lies, averaging about four to
each family, in need of help, cre-
ate a great need for the holiday,
and the Detroit community is
urged not to fail in this ,task..
It is important that contribu-
tions be sent early, at once, ad-
dressed to Mr. Smith, 24331
Blaine avenue.
