BUBLICK ADVOCATES BIRTH AND DEATH RATES INDICATE NEW

the way to Palestine. Ile referred
to the Arch of Titus, erected by
the Roman Senate "to commemo-
rate the destruction of the Jewish
nation." The arch, the speaker
said teaches that there is lone na-
tion that is eternal—the Jewish.
While the Persians, ancient Greeks
and Romans, Medians, Assyrians
and hundreds of other peoples
have disappeared, the Jewish na-
tion survived, in spite of the Ro-
man error. "That's why we are
building Palestine," Mr. Bublick
declared.
"The Will of God."
Mr. Bublick called it "the will
of God" that the' Jewish people
should have survived among all the
nations of the World. Ile ascribed
the reason for it to the fact that
the Jews accepted the Torah and
pledged adherence to the Law of
Moses.
"With the Torah'we live on for-
ever, without it we (lie," the speak-
er declared. "That is why, in the
upbuilding of Palestine, we must
build according to the spirit of
Jewish Law and Tradition."
Mr. Bublick expressed the wish
that he could take every anti-Se-
mite through the Jewish colonies
in Palestine and show his the ac-
complishments of the pioneers.
"That," he said, "would be the
swoetonst revenge—to this Jewry's
tOlvIllics how we surviked and how
we produce in spite of their perise-
cutions."
Laud. Mizrachi Schools.
Mr. Bublick described the work
of Mizrachi in Palestine. He laud-
ed the school system and said that
the 6,600 children taught in Pales-
tine schools are given the best
training, "al pi das Israel," accord-
ing to the law of Israel. -He de-
scribed the work for Kushruth in
the colonies, and declared that the
place for all believing Orthodox
Zionists is in the Mizrachi (organi-
zation.
The speaker made a plea for a
strong Mizrachi movement in De-
and urged that each syna-
gogue establish a separate chap-
ter.
Speaking of the national work,
he pointed out that Mizrachi has
succeeded in enlisting the aid of the
5,000 members of New York Young
Israel. Detroit Young Israel has
made similar arrangements here,
and Mr. Bublick is to address a
joint service of all the Detroit
branches at the Melbourne Jewish
Center on Saturday morning.
Mr. Bublick's plea for the or-
ganization of a Detroit club of
1,000, each to pay $25 annually,
was responded to by a number of
people, led by Sol Edelman, A. Kei-
dun, J. Levine. I. August, Mr. Han-
delman, and ethers.
Rabbi Ashinsky's Address.
Mr. Bublick was preceded with
an address by Rabbi A. M. Ashin-
sky, president of Detroit Mizrachi.
Rabbi Ashinsky laudeff the ef-
forts of Mr. Bublick in defense of
Orthodoxy and Jewish tradition.
Ile pointed to the day of the ban-
quet, the first day of Nisan, as a
good omen, in that the day intro-
duces the period of redemption on
the Jewish calendar, and is there-
fore an ideal time to speak of Pal-
estine's redemption.
Mizrachi, Rabbi Ashinsky said,
has given content to Zionism. The
movement, he declared, included in
it all the principles for Palestine's
uphuilding.

One out of every four deaths
among New York Jews is due to
diseases 44 the heart. The causes
of death from major diseases are:
Tuberculosis all forms), —1.6 per
vent; diseases of heart, 24.2 per
cent; cancer, 11.8 per cent; dia-
betes, 3.1 per cent; nephritis, 5.1
per cent; pneumonia tall fornao', ,
10.7 iser vent; cerebral hemor-
rhage, 1.1 per cent; and all other
diseases, 30.4 per cent.
Analysis of these figures by the
groups shows that with the excep•
doll of the group hum 211 to 24
years old, diseases of the' heart
rank first, proportionately, as it
cause of death. In live of the
eight age groups, cancer ranks
second. Among the general popu-
lation; tuberculosis ranks first in
four age groups and diseases of
the heart in four. In the groups
,oast the 25-year age mark, dia-
betes takes a greater toll propor-
tionately among the Jewish popu•
iation than among others.

'stifle Jewry, provided fur in the
Palestine Communities ordinance
.vhich grants Palestine Jews inter-
nal autonomy and representative
institutions, is to be composed of
11 members, according to a de-
;isnot of the Vaud Leumi, the Na-
tional Council of Palestine Jews.
Franchise is to by granted to
men and women alike above the
age of IX; men and women are to
be eligible for office at the age of
25. 'fhe granting of the franchise
to women was the bone of conten-
tion between the ultra-Orthodox
group in l'erusalem and the other
sections of the Jewish population
erouped around the Zionist Valid
Icoumi. The ultra-Orthodox threat•
ened to avail themselves of the
right granted to them in the com-
munities ordinance to create sepa-
rate organizations in case the fran-
chise would be granted to women.

The Valid Leumi has also ac-
cepted the proposal made by the
Mizrachi, the organization of Or-
thodox Zionists, with regard to the
procedure in the election of the
Palestine chief rabbinate and its
council. This )uestiOn, too, was
one on which opinions were sharply
divided and which was one of the
causes of Ilissention.
The ultra-
Orthodox expressed their fear that
the lay elements of the Palestine
Jewry, less interested in religious
matters, would be given too much
control over the election of the
spiritual leaders.

The Mizrachi, therefore, pro-
posed that the assembly which is
to be charged with the election of
the chief rabbinate and its coun-
cil he composed of 51 per cent
rabbis and 49 per cent laymen.
This proposal was accepted by the
Vaad Leumi.
