By MORRIS FISHMAN
Chairman, Detroit Zionist District Membership Committee.
The Detroit Zionist District is ideal success we must have the un-
now engaged in a campaign for divided loyalty of all Jewry, and
1,000 members, and it is important without such loyalty it will become
more and more difficult to raise
the needed funds for Palestine.
By strengthening the Zionist Or-
ganization we make this possible.
First, we open an avenue for study
and cultural activity in Zionist
ranks through our organizations;
and secondly, we build through .1
large membership an army of
workers and volunteers without
whom drives for Palestine cannot
succeed.
There can be do disputing about
this point.
The most important work faring
Detroit Jewry today is to build a
numerically strong Zionist District,
so that when the campaign opens
for the United l'alestine Appeal
on April 15 we may be able to say
to the community that we have a
force of ardent workers through
whose efforts American Jewry's
contributions towards the upbuild•
ing of Palestine will be written on
a golden page in Jewish history.
MORRIS FISHMAN
The time is ripe for great

things. Pledges on behalf of the

Near East. In this paper he pre-
pared Jewish public opinion
towards the day when Palestine
would be autonomous, by having
!
criticized the Young Turks for
their supernationalism. He was
thrown into prison but vindicated
himself by his own speech before
the Turkish judges, in Hebrew,
which made a profound impression
on them.
Ile married a Spanish Jewess,
member of an old Jewish family of
Palestine. At the outbreak of the
World War he declared himself
immediately for the Allies, and
managed to leave the country just

two hours before his condemnation
t o death.
His First American Tour.
From this time, the activities
of Mr. Ben Avi became that of an
orator, and he has spoken in the
United States alone over 700 times
on behalf of the Zionist Organiza-
tion, before Jewish and non-Jew-
ish meetings, in temples, churches
and cathedrals, Masonic lodges as
well as universities. Everywhere
Mr. Ben Avi tried to impress the
people with the fact of the rising
of a new Jewish generation charac-
terized by a new Jewish type, of
which he is but one of the many
representatives. One innovation
in his speeches is that he always
closes with a few sentences in his
beautiful Hebrew.
On his ( return to Palestine fol-
lowing the war he founded with
a ground of young Palestinians
the most powerful paper in the
land. His enflamed articles,
though not always agreeable to
Zionist leaders, had a peculiarly
healthy effect on Palestinian af-
fairs and led nearly always to self-
criticism of the work in Palestine.
He also helped to create the Pal-
estine organization, Beney-Benya-
44- min, the Progressive Young Farm-
ers' Association, whose most en-
thusiastic porte-parole he has be-
come and on whose behalf he is
now on his fourth visit to Amer-
ica. In a few weeks he will pub-
lish his second book in Latin
characters for the learning of
modern Ilebrev‘• in about six
weeks, and his novel, "Eleazar"
will shortly be published by the
Century Publishing Company in
English.
